Wittenberg University Offers Winter Music Classes

Springfield, Ohio — Wittenberg University's Center for Musical Development (CMD) is offering winter music classes for children and adults.

Vocal Audition Workshops for High School and Adults will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 11, and Monday, Jan. 18, in Krieg Hall Room 305 with Tonya Reynolds providing instruction. In the first session, the instructor will provide information and tips for aspiring performers in a relaxed environment that teaches audition preparation. The second session offers mock auditions, in which students can receive feedback in a casual and positive environment. The cost of the workshops is $68.

Beginning Piano for Elementary School Students offers first piano lessons in a small group setting and the opportunity to learn to read music and musical notation, find keyboard landmarks and play rhythms. Students will play music of increasing challenge in Wittenberg's state-of-the-art piano lab. Classes for students K-6 will meet from 5-5:45 p.m. every Wednesday between Jan. 20 and March 10 in Krieg Hall Room 301 with Tonya Reynolds providing instruction. The cost is $100 for eight classes.

Beginning Piano for Ages 12 Through Adults offers small group instruction that teaches students to read music, musical notation and rhythms. Classes meet from 7-7:45 p.m. every Friday between Jan. 20 and March 10 in Krieg Hall Room 301 with Jack McPeek providing instruction. The cost of the eight-week class is $100.

Computer Composition is for high school students and adults who want to learn the basics of computer composition. Participants will write a composition and transform it into a professional-looking manuscript. Classes meet from 6-6:45 p.m. every Tuesday between Jan. 19 and March 9 in Wittenberg's state-of-the-art Computer Composition Lab in Krieg Hall with Adam Davis providing instruction. The cost of the eight-week class is $100.

Voice Class for All Ages offers instruction in proper singing techniques, specifically offering insights on how to warm up, use proper diction and breathe to perform songs chosen by the teachers and students. Parents are invited to attend with children and participate in the sessions. Classes meet from 2-2:45 p.m. every Tuesday between Jan. 19 and March 9 in Krieg Hall Room 306 with Nancy Davis providing instruction. The cost of the eight-week class is $100.

Discovering Music for Children Infant to Age 3 provides participants with opportunities to sing songs and learn tonal patterns. The class involves moving, dancing, listening, playing simple instruments and chanting rhythm patterns while developing a strong bond between parent and child. Classes meet every Thursday from 5:10-5:55 p.m. between Jan. 21 and Feb. 11 in Krieg Hall Room 305 with Julianne Batchelor providing instruction. The cost of the four-week class is $53.

Discovering Music for Children Ages 4-6 involves creative movement, dancing and learning to sing. Children will vocalize rhythmic and tonal patterns and explore instruments while developing large and small motor skills with music. Classes meet every Thursday from 6-6:45 p.m. between Jan. 21 and Feb. 11 in Krieg Hall Room 305 with Julianne Batchelor providing instruction. The cost of the four-week class is $53.

In addition, private lessons are available for piano, string instruments, wind instruments, voice, computer composition, percussion and Suzuki violin.
