2003-04 Athletes of the Week

This list will be updated weekly as athletes are recognized by the NCAC or another official media outlet or governing body.

Geri Woessner
Women's Outdoor Track and Field (4/19/04): Senior Geri Woessner won the NCAC Heptathlon title for the third time in four years, and set a conference and school record with 4,455 points. She met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the event, as well as in the javelin (127 feet, 8 inches). Becky Barnes

Tim Gaal

Joe Rumschlag
Men's Outdoor Track and Field (5/3/04): Junior Joe Rumschlag tied for second in the 100 meters (11.41) at the Otterbein Mid-Week Qualifier, then ran 11.03 in the 100 at the NCAC Multi-Event Championships. Skip Ivery
Men's Outdoor Track and Field (4/19/04): Senior Skip Ivery won the 110-meter hurdles (14.84), and was second in the 400-meter hurdles (54.99) at the All-Ohio Championships. Click here for the complete list of 2004 NCAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Players of the Week.
Norah Gillam
Softball (4/12/04): Junior Norah Gillam won two games last week. She allowed 11 hits, two runs (none earned), four walks and fanned nine batters in 14 innings of work. Gillam is fifth in the NCAC with 47 strikeouts. Click here for the complete list of 2004 NCAC Softball Players of the Week.
Kelly Zilli
Women's Outdoor Track and Field (4/12/04): Senior Kelly Zilli won the 1500 meters (4:52.65) and 800 meters (2:19.83) at the Defiance Invitational to earn Distance/Middle Distance Runner of the Week honors. Tim Gaal
Men's Outdoor Track and Field (4/12/04): Senior Tim Gaal won the javelin (183-4) at the Defiance Yellow Jacket Invitaional to earn Field Events Athlete of the Week honors. Click here for the complete list of 2004 NCAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Players of the Week.
Tom Fox
Baseball (3/28/04): Senior Tom Fox carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the eighth inning in game three of the Wabash series last week. He allowed a one-out single, striking out 10 of the 29 batters he faced and walking five. Wittenberg won 2-0. Fox is 2-1 this season in five appearances. Gregg Carter
Men's Outdoor Track and Field (3/28/04): Freshman Gregg Carter won the 100 meters in 11:13 at the Roanoke Invitational. He was also part of the winning 4x100-meter relay that ran 43.78, and was third in the 200 meters (23.31). Also last week, Carter placed third in the 100 meters at the Gerald England Invitational, hosted by the University of Indianapolis. He was also part of the second-place 4x100-meter relay (43.41). Hans Rydquist
Men's Lacrosse (3/21/04): Senior attack Hans Rydquist scored five goals in a loss to St. Mary's. He added four more in his team's victory over Oberlin. He leads the Tigers with 13 goals, and is second with 17 points. Click here for the complete list of 2004 NCAC Men's Lacrosse Players of the Week.
Skip Ivery
Men's Indoor Track and Field (3/8/04): Senior Skip Ivery was named the NCAC Indoor Championships Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year. Joe Rumschlag
Men's Indoor Track and Field (3/8/04): Junior Joe Rumschlag was named the NCAC Indoor Championships Field Athlete of the Year. Rumschlag won titles in the long jump (22' 0-1/2") and in the 200-meter dash (22.75) and finished second in the triple jump (42' 8-34") and in the 400-meter run (51.44). Haley Warden
Women's Basketball (2/29/04): Senior forward Haley Warden totaled 39 points and 44 rebounds to lead the Tigers to their seventh NCAC Tournament title. She also shot a combined 13-of-14 from the free throw line and added 12 steals and 11 assists over three game on her way to being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Gregg Carter
Men's Indoor Track & Field - Sprints/Hurdles (2/29/04): Freshman Gregg Carter finished fifth in the 55 meters (6.68) at the Anderson Invitational. He was also part of two fifth-place relay teams: the 4x200-meter relay that finished in 1:34.29 and the 4x400-meter relay that crossed the finish line in 3:36.36. Haley Warden
Women's Basketball (2/22/04): Senior forward Haley Warden finished with 16 points and four rebounds in just 18 minutes to lead Wittenberg to a 76-44 win over Earlham. She added 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals in the 66-60 win over Ohio Wesleyan. It was her 13th double-double in 25 games this season. Cody Nicely
Men's Swimming and Diving (2/15/04): Wittenberg freshman Cody Nicely claimed the one-meter diving title (309.40) and finished fourth (245.40) on the three-meter board to earn Male Diver of the Year honors. Click here for the 2003-04 NCAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championship Web site.
Joe Rumschlag
Men's Indoor Track and Field - Field Events (2/15/04): Wittenberg junior Joe Rumschlag won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 7 1/2 inches, and placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet, 11 3/4 inches, both at the All-Ohio meet. Skip Ivery
Men's Track and Field - Sprints/Hurdles (2/15/04): Wittenberg senior Skip Ivery placed second in the 55-meter hurdles at the All-Ohio meet with a time of 7.63. Jessica McClish, Antonette Green, Kelly Zilli, Tina Valerius
Women's Track and Field Sprints/Hurdles (2/1/04): Wittenberg's sprint medley relay team of junior Tina Valerius, freshman Jessica McClish, freshman Antonette Green and senior Kelly Zilli won the event in an NCAC Relays meet record time of 4:22.57. Matt Locke and Skip Ivery
Men's Track and Field Sprints/Hurdles (2/1/04): Wittenberg's 55-meter hurdles relay combination of senior Skip Ivery and sophomore Matt Locke won the even at the NCAC Relays with a combined time of 15.69, an NCAC Relays meet record. Ivery finished first in 7.70 seconds, which is an NCAA provisional qualifying time, while Locke was clocked in 7.99 seconds. Kelly Zilli
Women's Track and Field Middle Distance/Distance (1/25/04): Wittenberg senior Kelly Zilli won the 800 meters (2:25.92) at Capital's Crusader Classic. Click here for the complete list of 2004 NCAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Players of the Week.
Haley Warden
Women's Basketball (1/18/04): Warden, a 5-9 senior forward, led the Tigers to a pair of NCAC victories last week. She scored 12 points with five rebounds against Kenyon, then had 15 points and nine rebounds in the second half alone to finish with 23 points and 12 rebounds against Wooster. Warden leads Wittenberg in scoring (14.1 ppg), rebounding (9.7) and steals (2.13 spg). Her rebounding average leads the NCAC entering the week. She stands fourth in the conference in scoring and ninth in steals. The Tigers have now won 26 straight NCAC regular season games. Daniel Russ
Men's Basketball (11/26): Russ was selected the Kiwanis Classic MVP after he totaled 39 points and 21 rebounds in two games as Wittenberg won its own tournament with victories over Eastern and Washington (MO). He also had four blocks against Washington and he scored six of the team' nine points in a decisive nine-point second-half run. Katie Babcock
Field Hockey (11/10): Babcock scored the only goal of the NCAC Tournament championship game with 3:17 left in the first overtime period, leading the Tigers to their second straight league tournament title and a berth into the NCAA Championships. Babcock, who recorded a goal in Wittenberg's 4-3 semifinal win over Denison, was named the NCAC Tournament MVP for her efforts. Sarah Yuskewich
Volleyball (11/10): Yuskewich led the Tigers to their seventh straight North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament title. In the NCAC tournament championship game, Yuskewich was dominant, recording 45 assists to lead Wittenberg past runner-up, Hiram, in three sets. She was named the NCAC Tournament MVP. Sebastian Missura
Men's Soccer (11/3): Missura, a freshman from Quito, Ecuador, scored to give Wittenberg a 2-1 win over Oberlin in double overtime on Nov. 1. He leads the Tigers and is ninth in the NCAC with nine goals and one assist for 19 total points in 18 games (1.06 points per game. Katy Barrett
Field Hockey (10/21): Barrett had two goals as the Tigers moved into a tie for the NCAC lead with an upset of Wooster and a win over Kenyon. Barrett scored in both games. Click here to go to womensfieldhockey.com.
Kristin Fox
Volleyball (10/12): Fox, who ranks second in the NCAC with 3.60 kills per game, smashed 63 kills, seven blocks and 15 digs in Wittenberg's 3-1 showing at its own National Invitational. Jen Meyer
Field Hockey (10/5): Meyer, a junior goalkeeper, posted her first two shutouts of the season for the Tigers. She led Wittenberg to 3-0 and 2-0 decisions over Ohio Wesleyan and Oberlin, respectively, and made five saves in the two games. Sarah Yuskewich
Volleyball (9/28): Yuskewich, a junior setter, had 15 assists per game last week, including four wins in the Wittenberg Invitational. She was named Tournament MVP as the Tigers swept through the bracket without dropping a game. She set a school record for assists in a career and is nearing 4,000 for her career. Yusef Abdul-Zahir
Football Defense (9/14): Abdul-Zahir, a 5-11, 185-pound safety, led a Tiger defense which held Urbana to a scoreless second half in a 28-12, come-from-behind win. He totaled 15 tackles, including three on special teams. He had one tackle for a loss of two yards and recorded one pass deflection. Raymar Hampshire
Football Offense (9/7): Hampshire, a 6-1, 195-pound fullback, the lone returning starter in the Tiger offensive backfield, led Wittenberg to a 34-7 win over Albion, rushing for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Tracy Butler
Women's Cross Country (9/2): Butler placed 18th in the Dayton Flyers Challenge. Wittenberg was the only NCAA Division III squad in a field that included teams from Cincinnati, Dayton, Miami and Wright State. Butler covered the soggy 5000-meter course in 20:58.
