Matt Lord
Men's Lacrosse (04/10/08): The men's lacrosse team has struggled to find its offensive stride in 2008, but freshman Matt Lord (Pickerington, Ohio/North) broke through the hard times to find the back of the net six times in less than a week. Lord netted three goals in the Tigers’ loss to Kenyon College. In the team’s next game against Adrian College, an 11-9 loss, Lord registered three goals and an assist in the first period alone. Unfortunately for Lord and the Tigers, those were the last goals that Lord will score this season as he suffered a broken collarbone later in the game. |
|
Nicole Ottavi
Softball (04/10/08): She may be small in stature, but she certainly swings a big stick. Senior rightfielder and four-hitter Nicole Ottavi (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone) is making the most of her last time through North Coast Athletic Conference opponents. Through six conference games, Ottavi has a whopping .600 batting average. She has collected 12 hits, five runs batted in, and five runs scored over the course of those six games. Her fine performance at the dish has helped lead the Tigers to a 4-2 start in conference games. On the year, Ottavi is tied for the team lead in hits with 26 and is second on the team in runs scored with 15. |
|
Mitch Cohagan
Men's Lacrosse (03/25/08): With the men's lacrosse team off to the best start in school history at 4-1, there have been a number of individual standouts. One key Tiger contributor has been freshman midfielder Mitch Cohagan (Pickerington, Ohio/North). In the team's last game against Mount St. Joseph, Cohagan found the back of the net three times and also added an assist. On the season, Cohagan is tied for first on the team in goals with nine and in second on the team in points with 12. He has also contributed defensively, scooping up five ground balls. Cohagan hopes his team can continue their winning ways when the face the nationally ranked Big Red of Denison on March 26. |
|
Lizzie Amorello
Women's Lacrosse (03/25/08): Last year, junior attacker Lizzie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy) scored 17 goals. It appears that number is sure to increase this season. Just four games into the season Amorello has already tallied nine goals, good for the team lead. In the Tigers' last game against Tri-State, Amorello threw in four goals and had an assist in the team's 19-1 victory. Not only does Amorello lead the team in goals, but she is also tops in assists with three and in points with 12. Amorello hopes to again lead to Tigers to victory as they take on Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Mo., on March 29. |

Brooke Boswell
Softball (03/11/08): Sometimes a pitcher's simple won-loss records does not tell the whole story about an individual's performance. For sophomore pitcher Brooke Boswell (Hamilton, Ohio/Fairfield), this was certainly true. Over the softball team's spring break trip to Kissimmee, Florida, Boswell finished the week with a 1-2 record. That record, however, did not do her justice. Boswell finished the week with a miniscule 1.80 earned run average and totaled 16 strikeouts compared to just one walk. Offensively, Boswell also enjoyed a successful week as she collected five hits, including two doubles, one triple, and one home run. Boswell is currently leading the team in runs batted in with six and is tied for first in total bases with 12. Boswell and her Tiger teammates head to the field in Ohio for the first time on March 15 for a game at Heidelberg College. |
|
Neil Anderson
Men's Swimming and Diving (02/26/08): Sophomore Neil Anderson (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) picked a good time to turn in his best performances. At the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Swimming and Diving championships, Anderson placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle. Anderson's time in the preliminary heat of the 500-yard freestyle, 4:39.40, was fast enough to grant him an NCAA "B" cut and break the school record set by Paul Sutter in 1987. Anderson followed up his successful NCAC Championship meet with another great meet the next weekend at the Kenyon Invitational. Anderson bettered his time in the 500-yard freestyle, getting it down to 4:36.37, and putting him in great position to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet. Anderson capped off the day by taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle in an NCAA B Cut time of 1:41.89, breaking yet another school record. Anderson's time in the 200-yard freestyle broke the time of three-time All-American Steve Rader. If Anderson makes the NCAA Championship meet, it will take place from March 20-22 at the Miami University (Ohio). |
|
Allison Walker
Women's Track and Field (02/26/08): After a trying day in which senior Allison Walker (Columbus, Ohio/Academy) had to try out many different weights, Walker managed to pull it all together and turn in a record-setting performance in the weight throw. At the All-Ohio Invitational, Walker broke her own weight to start the day and then the weight she was borrowing from Capital University broke as well. Walker managed to put all those difficulties behind her, though, and set the school record after she tossed her weight 45-5.75 feet. The next weekend at the Mike Reindl Last Chance Meet, Walker again had a strong performance as she hurled the weight 43-5 and placed third. She also finished third in the shot put. Walker will try again to better her performance at the NCAC Championships from February 29-March 1. |
|
Erik Larkin
Men's Track and Field (02/12/08): Junior Erik Larkin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Country Day) has a habit of scoring points for the men's track and field team in the triple jump. At the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) relays on February 2, Larkin recorded a third-place finish. One week later on February 9 at the DePauw Indoor Invitational, Larkin again landed in third place in the triple jump and was the Tigers' highest male finisher at the meet. Larkin's jump was not only good enough for third place at the meet, it also set a new school record. The jump of 44-10.75 broke the old mark of 44-7.5 set by Bart Lubbers in 1998. Larkin's next chance to jump, and perhaps break his new school record, is February 16 at the All-Ohio Invitational, hosted by Otterbein College. |
|
Women's 4x200 Meter Relay Team
Women's Track and Field (02/12/08): Perhaps there is not a better sport to illustrate the connection between individual performances and team success than in track and field. On February 2, the women's track and field team competed in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) relays and the 4x200 Meter Relay Team took home first place. The team consisted of junior Tara Osborne (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda), junior Kristy Parker (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross), senior Nicole Bailey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit County Day) and junior Katie Shoemaker (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe). The winning time was 1:51.37, almost 0.5 seconds ahead of the second place team from Oberlin College. The 4x200 Meter Relay Team will go up against some of the best in the state on February 16 at the All-Ohio Invitational, hosted by Otterbein College. |
|
Brandan Barabino
Men's Basketball (01/29/08): Redemption. How sweet it is. When Wittenberg senior Brandan Barabino (Toledo, Ohio/St. John’s Jesuit) stepped to the free throw line with 15 seconds remaining in regulation, the Tigers trailed by just one point to their arch rival, the College of Wooster. Barabino missed both free throws and Wooster’s Devin Fulk canned both of his, putting the Fighting Scots up by three with 13 seconds remaining. Barabino then launched a three-pointer with one second remaining, and was fouled in the act. He went back to the free throw line and nailed all three attempts, pushing the game into overtime. The Tigers eventually won the game 87-86 as junior Greg Hill (Farmington Hills, Mich./Redford Union) hit the game winning layup with four seconds on the clock. On the night Barabino scored a career-high 26 points and added eight rebounds and five assists. Barabino followed up his stellar performance against the Fighting Scots by putting up a game-high 16 points in the Tigers loss at Ohio Wesleyan University. On the year, the Tigers have an 11-6 record, including an impressive 7-1 mark against North Coast Athletic Conference foes. |
|
Katie Gregorevich
Women's Basketball (01/29/08): When the 2007-08 Wittenberg women’s basketball team needs points, a rebound, or just a big play, they often turn to senior Katie Gregorevich (Northfield, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit). Gregorevich tried her hardest to carry the Tigers to a victory over the Kenyon Ladies in a match-up of North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) unbeaten teams last week. Unfortunately, the Tigers lost the game 70-60, but Gregorevich’s performance was the finest of her career. She scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down a career high 14 rebounds. Much like Barabino, Gregorevich followed up her fine performance with another one, totaling 16 points and six rebounds in a Martin Luther King Day matchup with Capital University. Over the last four games Gregorevich has scored 92 points, an average of 23 per contest. On the year, the Tigers post an overall record of 7-8, with a 6-2 mark in conference games. |
|
Chris Culkin
Men's Swimming and Diving (01/15/08): After being injured for over a year, you can only imagine freshman Chris Culkin’s (Novi, Mich./Northville) excitement when he finally got into the water on Jan. 11 against the Transylvania Pioneers. Culkin finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle and second in the 500-yard freestyle, trailing only teammate Neil Anderson (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood). Culkin’s finishes helped pace the Tiger’s 139-100 victory. The next day Culkin and his teammates faced stiff competition when the nationally ranked Denison Big Red came to Springfield. Culkin held his own against some of the best in the country as he finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle. The Tiger men continue their conference schedule when they travel to Hiram College on Saturday, Jan. 19. |
|
Kaitlyn Wesseler
Women's Track and Field (01/15/08): All athletes want their first performance on a new team to be impactful and memorable. Not everybody enjoys the thrill of breaking a school record their first time out, however. On Jan. 12, freshman Kaitlyn Wesseler (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) participated in her first meet for the Red and White and broke the school record in the pole vault. Her jump of 9-6¼ passed the previous record of 9-0¼ shared by three former Tigers. Her jump was good enough for a second place finish in the Purple & White Indoor Invitational at Capital University. Wesseler and the rest of the women’s track and field team return to competition on Friday, Jan. 18 at Cedarville University. |
|
Andy Vanover
Football (10/30/07): As a senior playing in his last few games, running back
Andy Vanover (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) is making the most of these opportunities.
In his last two games, both Tiger victories, Vanover has rushed for over 100 yards
in each contest. In the Tigers most recent game, at home against Oberlin College,
Vanover rushed for a career high 117 yards and added three touchdowns. On the year,
Vanover leads the Tigers in rushing touchdowns with seven and has gained 377 yards on
the ground. With the victory over Oberlin, the Tigers moved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the
NCAC with their only loss coming to 10th ranked Wabash College.

Beth Vonderbrink
Field Hockey (10/30/07): Every great team needs that one defensive player that coaches
often refer to as the "Eraser." The one who covers any mistakes that teammates might
have made and the one who just makes it nearly impossible for the other team to score.
For the Wittenberg University field hockey team, that player is junior defensive player
Beth Vonderbrink (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame). On the season, Vonderbrink leads
the Tigers with five defensive saves and is clearly the team's leader on defense.
With her leading the way, the Tigers picked up back-to-back shutouts last week over Oberlin and
Kenyon to earn a first-place tie for the conference title for the first time since 2004. |
|
Shane Price
Men's Soccer (10/18/07): It's hard to score three goals in a game in any sport,
but even more difficult when three goals are rarely scored by a team in a game. But on October 16,
men's soccer junior forward Shane Price (Minford, Ohio/Minford) scored three goals to lead
the way for the Tigers victory over Earlham College. Price's performance came as no surprise to
his teammates, though, as he leads the Tigers in goals with 11 and points with 24. The win helped
the Tigers remain in contention for the conference title as it moved their record to 4-1-1 in
conference play and to 10-3-2 overall.
|
|
Meghan O'Rourke
Women's Soccer (10/18/07): Quite the opposite of Price's goal-scoring knack, women's soccer
senior goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne)
has made a habit of keeping the ball out of the back of the net. With the team's shutout victory
over Oberlin College on October 13, O'Rourke became the new North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC)
all-time career shutout leader with the 42nd of her career. O'Rourke's fine defensive effort helped
lead the team to victories over Denison, Oberlin, and Earlham last week and kept them in
a first place tie in the NCAC standings. |
|
Matt Borland
Men's Soccer (10/02/07): The saying goes: "Big time players come up with big time plays
in big time situations." Wittenberg men's soccer junior forward Matt Borland (Kettering, Ohio/Alter)
came up with two big time plays last week when the Tigers needed it most. Playing what some teammates
say was the best game of his career, Borland assisted on Shane Price's team-leading eighth goal of the season
to break a scoreless tie with Wooster and then added a goal of his own late in the game to seal
the victory. The win moved the Tigers to a perfect 2-0 in conference play and to 8-2-1 overall.

|
Jan Kehres
Volleyball (10/02/07): When your team starts off the year 21-0, the whole season looks like somewhat of a fairytale. On Saturday afternoon, senior outside hitter Jan Kehres (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) provided her own storybook ending to another Wittenberg volleyball sweep of an opponent. Kehres pounded home her 1,000 career kill on match point to seal the victory for the Tigers. As a result of her outstanding play, Kehres was named the Sports Imports/Division III National Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. She becomes the second Tiger player to earn this award already this season as junior outside hitter Jackie Williams was named Player of the Week on September 10th. |
|
Ben McAnnis-Entenman
Men's Soccer (9/18/07): Goalies are supposed to keep the ball out of the net, not put it into the net! Last week, with
the Tigers trailing DePauw 1-0 with just 1:50 left in regulation, goalie Ben McAnnis-Entenman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) ran down the field as the Tigers had a free kick. McAnnis-Enteman then found the back of the DePauw goal with a header and helped the team earn a 1-1 tie as he finished with seven saves and the lone goal for the Tigers. On the season, McAnnis-Entenman has registered three shutouts and has a goals against average of just 0.87. |
|
Hannah Scheckelhoff
Field Hockey (9/18/07): Two wins, one game-winning goal, and one tournament Most Valuable Player award is a great way to start off your collegiate career, and this is exactly what Hannah Scheckelhoff (Blacklick, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) did. Scheckelhoff was named MVP of the Wilson College Tournament as the Tigers went 2-0 over the weekend to win the tournament. On the season, Scheckelhoff has registered one goal and one assist, good for a total of three points. |
|
Brad McKinley
Football (9/4/07): Most first year student-athletes can only dream of starting off their careers the way Brad McKinley (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) kicked his off last weekend. In his debut for the Red and White, the freshman linebacker led all players with 15 total tackles in the Tigers' 13-0 loss to Capital. He also recorded a sack, tossing the quarterback for a five yard loss, and broke up a pass in his first collegiate game. |
|
Jessica Kimble
Volleyball (9/4/07): After coming into her own as a middle hitter for Wittenberg's powerful offense in 2006, Jessica Kimble (Dennison, Ohio/Claymont) wasted no time getting off to a hot start to the 2007 season. Over the four games the Tigers played on their opening weekend, Kimble recorded 19 kills with just two errors in 34 attempts, good for an attack percentage of .500.
Kimble was not shy on the defensive side of the ball, either, as she registered a whopping seven solo blocks to go along with her two digs. |
