2009-10 Athletes of the Week

This list will be updated weekly as athletes are recognized by the NCAC or another official media outlet or governing body.

Melissa Gartner
Women's Soccer (11/8/09 - NCAC): Wittenberg freshman goalkeeper Melissa Gartner (Cincinnati, OH/St. Ursula) made eight saves and pitched a shutout to help the Tigers to their fourth straight NCAC tournament championship. She made five saves in a 1-0 semifinal victory against Allegheny and had three saves in the championship against Earlham, including a late acrobatic stop to preserve the Tiger lead. Wittenberg took the championship, 2-1. This season, Gartner has posted a 0.36 GAA and an .863 save percentage with 12 shutouts and only seven goals allowed. Aaron Huffman
Football (11/8/09 - NCAC): Wittenberg senior quarterback Aaron Huffman rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another to key the Tigers’ best offensive performance in 2009. He finished with 17 completions in 24 attempts for 299 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 35 yards to help the Tigers clinch at least a share of their ninth North Coast Athletic Conference championship. Matt Erenpreiss
Men's Swimming and Diving (11/2/09 - NCAC): Wittenberg senior diver Matt Erenpreiss (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) set a school and pool record with a 277.70 from the one-meter board in a 165-135 home win over Wooster, and earned a score that provisionally meets the NCAA standard. He also won the three-meter event at the same meet (288.2) and won the one-meter event (246.05) in a 124.5-96.5 win at Ohio Wesleyan. Darcy Dubuc
Women's Cross Country (10/18/09 - NCAC): Wittenberg sophomore Darcy Dubuc (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven) posted a fifth-place finish at the Wilmington Invitational with a time of 19:03.96 to lead the Tigers to a third-place team finish. Kevin Frick
Men's Cross Country (10/18/09 - NCAC): Wittenberg junior Kevin Frick (Columbus, OH/Grandview) placed 13th at the Wilmington Invitational in a time of 26:16.18 to lead the Tigers to a 10th-place finish. Click here to see the complete list of 2009 NCAC Cross Country Runners of the Week.
Zach Hurtt
Football (10/18/09 - NCAC): Wittenberg earned a 10-7 victory over Wabash behind the efforts of its top-ranked defense, which was sparked by sophomore linebacker Zach Hurtt’s (Fort Thomas, KY/Highlands) 12 tackles, including eight solo stops and three tackles for a loss of 10 yards. The Tiger defense allowed just 29 yards on 28 rushing attempts and 223 total yards to a team ranked third in NCAA Division III in scoring and seventh in total offense. Boo Vernon
Field Hockey (10/18/09 - NCAC): Wittenberg junior forward Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, IL/Cushing Academy) notched a pair of game-winners to help the Tigers to a 2-0 week and a share of first place in the North Coast standings. She scored twice in a 4-2 win over Ohio Wesleyan and added another tally in a 3-2 victory at Kenyon. Jenny Schaafsma
Field Hockey (10/12/09 - womensfieldhockey.com): Tiger sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) has come on strong at just the right time, leading Wittenberg to four straight NCAC shutouts. Her fine work in wins over Oberlin, Denison and Wooster in a seven-day span earned her Honor Roll mention from womensfieldhockey.com. Sheryl Chambers
Women's Soccer (10/6/09 - NCAC): Sophomore Sheryl Chambers (Victorville, CA/St. Joan of Arc) scored both of Wittenberg’s goals in a pair of 1-0 North Coast victories. Chambers scored in the 35th minute of a decision over Ohio Wesleyan, then followed with an overtime goal with 28 seconds left to hand Wooster its first loss of 2009. Eddie Vallery
Football (9/30/09 - D3Football.com): Wittenberg junior Eddie Vallery (South Solon, Ohio/Madison Plains) had nine tackles, four solo, in a 20-0 win against Ohio Wesleyan, including two tackles for loss, both sacks totaling minus-25 yards. In addition to all that, Vallery blocked an Ohio Wesleyan punt, leading to the Tigers' first touchdown of the game in the second quarter. Eddie Vallery
Football (9/27/09 - NCAC): Wittenberg junior defensive lineman Eddie Vallery (South Solon, OH/Madison Plains) made nine total stops for the Tigers in their 20-0 defeat of Ohio Wesleyan. Vallery made two sacks for losses totaling 25 yards, and blocked a punt for another loss of 25. Wittenberg, which has shut out two straight opponents, remains undefeated through three games. Eddie Vallery
Football (9/23/09 - D3Football.com): Wittenberg junior Eddie Vallery (South Solon, Ohio/Madison Plains) spearheaded a dominating defensive effort in a 46-0 win at Washington U., recording nine tackles, seven solo, with five tackles for loss and four sacks. Tigers have allowed just six points and 216 yards of total offense through two games in 2009, including a shutout and just 99 yards by the Bears. Meredith Price
Field Hockey (9/13/09 - NCAC): Tiger junior defender Meredith Price (Highland Park, IL/North Shore Country Day) assisted on the Tigers' second goal of the game to knot the score at 2-2. Bleu George
Men's Golf (9/7/09 - NCAC): Wittenberg junior Bleu George (Lancaster, OH/Fisher Catholic) made his Tiger debut a memorable one as he carded an opening round 66 - matching 33s on the front and back side on the strength of eight birdies at the Denison Fall Classic. He added a 70 on Day 2 to pick up medalist honors by five strokes. His one-round score of 66 and his two-round total of 136 are the best at Wittenberg in at least a decade. Corey Weber
Football (9/6/09 - NCAC): Wittenberg junior Corey Weber (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) led all players in rushing and was second by one yard in receiving yards to lead Wittenberg to a 37-6 win over Olivet. He led all players with three touchdowns, starting with the Tiger’s first TD just three minutes into the game on a 9-yard burst.
