Wittenberg Blanks Wabash In Game One Of Doubleheader Split

Patrick Williams

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - Wittenberg baseball split a doubleheader with the Wabash Little Giants on Saturday, in the first day of a back-to-back doubleheader in Crawfordsville, Ind. The first game found the Tigers on the short end of a 1-3 score, while they shutout the Little Giants by a five-run margin in Game Two.

Sophomore Joel Assenheimer (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) absorbed the loss despite six solid innings for the complete game, allowing nine hits and three earned runs while walking none and fanning three. The Tigers' offense was rather unexplosive in the early matchup, scattering four hits and scoring only once, on an RBI single through the right side in the sixth frame from senior left fielder Jeremy Fruhwirth (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek).

Game Two went in Wittenberg's favor, as the lineup broke through with five runs and junior starting pitcher Tim Antil (Brookville, Ohio/Northmont) went the distance with a seven-inning, three-hit, six-strikeout, shutout performance, an outing that may very well be the best the Tigers' have seen from their own staff this season. Antil improved to 4-2 on the season with the victory.

The lineup revolved around the hot bat of junior right fielder Patrick Williams (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield), who smoked three base-hits for a superb four RBI in the game. Also driving home a run was Fruhwirth, who went 1-for-3.

The Tigers stay the night in Crawfordsville to return to Mud Hollow Stadium for doubleheader No. 2 of the weekend on Sunday. After Saturday's games, the Red & White stand at 12-15 overall, with a 3-9 mark in the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division.
