Early Leads Propel Tigers to Road Wins

Tim Antil
NEW CONCORD, Ohio - Baseball has always been known as a game of streaks. After a slow start to the 2009 campaign, the Tiger men have steadily shifted momentum to their side; their most recent exploits coming in a 4-2, 11-8 sweep of Muskingum College. The pair of victories moved the Tigers within a game of .500 while the club has now won five of their last six encounters.

One of the key components to the reversal of fortunes came on the mound in Game 1, where senior ace Tim Antil (Brookville, Ohio/Northmont) compiled his best outing of the season with 5.1 innings of solid work. The righty only gave up five hits and two runs while striking out five to pick up his first win of the year. Junior Darin Mumaw (Fort Loramie, Ohio/Fort Loramie) came in to shut the door on the Muskies with an inning and a third of scoreless relief.

The Tigers used small ball to good effect in their lone run outburst, scoring four unearned runs in the second on only three hits.

Game 2 would provide a stark contrast, with the bats cranking home runs at an alarming rate. The Tigers jumped out to an 11-1 lead through four innings before the Muskies unsuccessfully tried to rally. Junior Kory Winter (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) knocked in three runs and scored in a 2-4 day at the dish. Sophomore Zach Spring (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) continued his recent hot streak, scoring twice on three hits.

The midweek wins prepare the Tigers for another OAC foe Thursday, March 26 at Carleton Davidson Stadium, when the Quakers of Wilmington College visit for a 6 p.m. start.
