Initially, the fifth meeting between the two NCAC East Division rivals appeared destined for a pitcher's duel, with both starters pitching shuout ball through four innings. The Scots finally broke through against Lord starter Tom Boucher for a single run in the fifth. The men from Gambier made their own rally in the sixth, highlighted by a Zach Ciccone RBI double to take a 3-1 lead.
Kenyon leadoff man Jake Calcei then blasted a solo home run to give Kenyon a 4-1 edge an inning later before Wooster set out on the comeback trail. First basemen Matt Groezinger, who reached safely four times on the day, drove in two with an RBI single that put the No. 1 seed back on level terms at 4-4. Zack Vesco followed with an RBi single to give the Scots a lead they would not relinquish.
The teams traded runs in the eighth before Wooster reliever Mark Miller shut the door for the save. Matt DeGrand picked up the win in one-third of an inning of work, while Kenyon lefty Geoff Bollier took the loss.
Game two of the best-of-three set comes tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Carleton Davidson Stadium, with game three, if necessary, to come right after the conclusion of game two. Wooster is in search of their first NCAC Tournament title since 2006 while Kenyon seeks their first ever conference tournament championship.
