Wittenberg Wins Shootout to Keep in Playoff Picture

Mike Yednock
DELAWARE, Ohio - With their season on the line, the Wittenberg Tiger bats came alive in a back-and-forth 16-15 win over Ohio Wesleyan in Game 2 of a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) West Division doubleheader. The win followed a 4-0 loss at the hands of the Bishops that left Wittenberg needing to win to stay in the conference playoff picture.

In the second seven-inning affair, Wittenberg amassed surreal numbers at the plate, including 14 hits, 14 RBIs and five walks. Sophomore Mike Yednock (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) enjoyed a career contest with three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs to go along with four defensive assists. Yednock added the first home run of his collegiate career, which ultimately pushed across the game-winning run.

Classmate Zach Spring (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) stroked four hits and joined Yednock in the three-RBI, three-run category. Junior Joel Assenheimer (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) got the win in relief on an otherwise forgettable day for the Tiger pitching staff.

Wittenberg dropped the opener 4-0 despite only allowing one earned run.

The second doubleheader with Ohio Wesleyan has been rescheduled for 12 p.m. Sunday, April 26, due to the threat of rain. Up next for the Tigers comes a non-conference meeting with Otterbein at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22.
