SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - It had been a week between games for the Wittenberg field hockey team, a long week following a disappointing loss on Sept. 15 to Denison University thanks to flooding rains caused by Hurricane Ivan in northern Virginia, where the Tigers were scheduled to play over the weekend. The two-time defending North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament champions showed no ill-effects from the layoff, however, as they put their biggest offensive output of the season in a 6-1 victory at Earlham College.

With the win, Wittenberg improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC and set the stage for a big battle Saturday evening at Edwards-Maurer Field with arch-rival Wooster. Earlham, which scored its first goal of the season in the loss to Wittenberg, dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC.

Wittenberg picked up two goals each from junior Julia Wickham and sophomore Katy Barrett. Barrett's first tally, off a feed from senior Blair Ufer, was the game-winner that broke a 1-1 tie with 11:39 remaining in the first half. Senior Sarah Wallace and freshman Sadie Mummert had the other two goals for the Tigers, while Barrett and freshman Alison Voigt chipped in with assists.

In goal, freshman Nicole Irvin turned away two of the four shots Earlham attempted in the game.
