Wittenberg Bounces Back With Win Over Notre Dame
In Final Game Of Season-Opening Tournament

Caroline Mason
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - A day after getting outshot 27-2 by one of the top teams in the nation, the Wittenberg Tigers showed some moxie Sunday, claiming a 1-0 victory over the College of Notre Dame (Md.) in the final game of the Black-Eyed Susan Tournament at Villa Julie College.

The Tigers evened their early-season record at 1-1 overall heading into a five-day break before welcoming North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon to Edwards-Maurer Field for a crucial game on Saturday, Sept. 9. Notre Dame, which lost 6-0 in its Saturday opener, dropped to 0-2 on the young season.

Wittenberg held a commanding 18-2 advantage in total shots and a 10-1 edge in penalty corners. Still, the Tigers found the back of the cage just once as junior Caroline Mason (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) scored less than two minutes into the second half. That was all freshman goalkeeper Sarah Umberger (Concord, NH/Derryfield School) needed as she pitched her first collegiate shutout while recording a pair of saves.
