Tigers Rip Oberlin For Seven, Advance To NCAC Finals

Boo Vernon
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Head Coach Diana Kuser and her field hockey crew earned themselves another game in the 2007 season, advancing to the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championship game with a 7-3 win over Oberlin.

Wittenberg and the Yeowomen battled in an offensively charged game, where both teams combined to break the single game NCAC goal record. Wittenberg alone broke the one-team version of the record with seven. Five different players found the cage, with senior Alison Voigt (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) and freshman Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, Ill./Cushing Academy) leading the way with two apiece.

Voigt maxed out the points total for the Tigers, earning five on the strength of an assist in addition to her two goals. Her assist helped Vernon on her second goal. Also coming up with points in the game were Whitney Marshall (Barre, Mass./Quabbin Regional), Tori Casanta (Mason, Ohio/Cor Jesu Academy), and Florine Dunki Jacobs (Heemstede, The Netherlands/Stedelyk Gymnasium Haarlem), who each scored a goal, and freshman Meredith Price (Highland Park, Ill./North Shore Country Day), who assisted Vernon's first goal.

The win makes it five straight games for the Tiger ladies, who reeled off five wins in their last six games to push themselves to the top of the conference after a mediocre 5-4 start. In a three-way tie for the regular season league title, the Tigers found themselves owners of the tiebreaker criteria and came up with first seed for the tournament, meaning they will host the conference final on Saturday against third-seeded Kenyon, who upset Wooster by a 1-0 score in Wooster, Ohio, in their semifinal matchup.
