Tigers Fall to Williams College in NCAA Division III Tournament

Jen Meyer
GRANTHAM, Pa. - The high-scoring Wittenberg University field hockey team had been through days like this one, but never at such a critical juncture. The Tigers, winners of the 2002 North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles, were defeated 3-0 by Williams College in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament Friday afternoon at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa.

Williams, champion of the Northeast Athletic Conference and the 14th ranked team in the country coming into the tournament, improved to 15-3 overall with the victory and advanced to the regional championship game on Saturday against the No. 2 ranked host team, Messiah. Wittenberg, ranked 13th by the American Field Hockey Coaches Association, finishes its season at 17-4 overall.

The Ephs, who were regional finalists a year ago as well, got a goal just three minutes into the game and gathered momentum from that point. Williams scored its other two goals with 11:13 remaining in the first half and then put the game on ice with another tally 10 minutes into the second half.

Wittenberg was outshot 16-3 overall and the Ephs attempted eight penalty corners to the Tigers' two. Tiger senior forward Emily Duh, who set school records this year with 26 goals and 60 total points, was held to just one shot in the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Jen Meyer managed to turn away seven Williams shots.
