2001 Field Hockey Press Releases

Coming into the 2001 season, second-year coach Marianne Beshara didn't know what to expect. She knew the Tigers had some strong players returning and some talented players coming into the program, but there were holes to be filled and questions to be answered.

Beshara got those answers as the 2001 season went on, although not every response was the one she was looking for. The Tigers started the season 8-0, but a couple of midseason missteps cost them the NCAC championship and an opportunity to participate in the NCAA Division III playoffs. Still, Wittenberg finished with a strong 13-6
record (13-3 against Division III opponents) and a school record-tying 10-2 NCAC mark. Hardly accomplishments to be scoffed at.

Last week, the Tigers were busy again as they played four games in lousy weather against quality opponents. They got things started on Senior Night at Edwards-Maurer Field with a 2-0 win over Earlham, thanks to goals by freshmen Amy Burlingame (Dennis, Mass./Yarmouth-Dennis) and Katie Houchins (Denver, Colo./Kent-Denver) and the final shutout of senior goalkeeper Georgina Klinzing's (Gasport, NY/Royalton Hartland) fine career. Also appearing in her final home game as a Tiger was midfielder Jessica Martin (Powell, Ohio/Thomas Worthington).

Then on Thursday, the Tigers came from behind to defeat defending conference medalist Denison 2-1 on the road as junior Emily Duh (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) scored the equalizer with three minutes left in regulation and sophomore Barb Keselman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) hammered home the game-winner in overtime.

The season came to an end over the weekend at the KIT/NCAC Regional Championship at Kenyon. The Tigers defeated Rhodes 2-0 on Saturday behind goals by Duh and freshman Deb Muller (Weston, Conn./The Millbrook School) and shutout netminding by freshman Jenny Meyer (Solon, Ohio/Hathaway Brown). Then in the championship game on Sunday, the Tigers were defeated by NAIA power Lindenwood 2-0.

Heading toward the finish line of the 2001 season, the Tigers have had their share of struggles, last week losing to California-Berkeley 7-0 in a rare game against a nationally ranked Division I team at Ohio State University, defeating Kenyon 2-0 in the lone NCAC match of the week, and then losing back-to-back 1-0 games during a Fall Break road trip  to Ithaca and Mercyhurst over the weekend.

The Tigers, who started the year 7-0, did get solid play out of freshman goaltender Jenny Meyer (Solon, Ohio/Hathaway Brown), who started all four games and recorded more than 10 saves in each of the two losses on the Fall Break trip. Removing the loss to California, Meyer has yielded just four goals in six games, including four starts.

In the win over Kenyon, Meyer recorded her first shutout, while the offense was led by freshman Amy Burlingame (Dennis, Mass./Yarmouth-Dennis) and junior Cara Romanowski (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), who had one goal each.

The Tigers conclude the 2001 season this week with four more games, beginning with senior recognition day at Wittenberg against Earlham. Then comes a make-up at Denison on Thursday and then two games at the KIT/NCAC tournament at Kenyon on Saturday and Sunday. The Tigers are the defending KIT/NCAC champions.

As the season heads toward an exciting conclusion, the Tigers are trying to regroup from their most difficult week. Four days after losing to conference heavyweight Wooster, the Tigers were stunned at Oberlin last Tuesday 2-1 to fall out of first place in the NCAC, a position they had assumed from the start of the season.

Wittenberg bounced back at home on Thursday with a 3-1 victory over Ohio Wesleyan behind two goals and an assist by freshman Amy Burlingame (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth). Junior Cara Romanowski (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) had the other goal against the Bishops, while freshman Deb Muller (Weston, Conn./The Millbrook School) had the team's lone tally at Oberlin earlier in the week.

That was just the start of a strange week for the Tigers. On Saturday, the officials didn't show up for a scheduled game at Denison, meaning that the two teams will have to reschedule. On Sunday, the refs made it to the game, but so did the  University of California-Berkeley, the 20th ranked team in Division I. The Bears recorded a 7-0 win over Wittenberg in a game played at Ohio State.

October 9, 2001 -

After eight straight victories to open the 2001 season, the Tigers headed into the season's second meeting with the Wooster with a head of steam. But the Scots were up to the task, evening the score with the Tigers with a 2-1 win last Friday night. The loss dropped Wittenberg into a first-place tie with Wooster in the NCAC standings with five games remaining.

Earlier in the week, Wittenberg had defeated Earlham 3-1. The goals came from sophomore Barb Keselman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and freshmen Katie Houchins (Denver, Colo./Kent) and Amy Burlingame (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth). In the Wooster loss, junior back Heather House (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) scored her first collegiate goal.

The Tigers now face a busy week of conference action against Oberlin, Ohio Wesleyan and Denison before getting the opportunity of a season against Division I California-Berkeley at Ohio State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

October 2, 2001 -

The field hockey Tigers started the 2000 season 6-0 en route to one of the finest seasons in school history that included winning a share of the NCAC title and claiming the KIT/NCAC Mideast Regional Tournament. Despite playing a tough early-season schedule, the Tigers have done that outstanding start one better in 2001 and now head into the second half of the NCAC regular season round robin with a perfect 7-0 mark (5-0 in conference).

The Tigers are one of just eight Division III teams in the nation who remain undefeated, and the 7-0 start is the best for Wittenberg since 1997, when the Tigers went on to a 17-3 record, an NCAC title and a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Wittenberg has shut out six of its seven opponents thus far, yielding only a pair of goals in an important early-season 3-2 victory at Wooster on Sept. 8. The Tigers' latest shutout wins came last Monday in a 1-0 decision over Denison, last year's NCAC co-champion, and last Tuesday in a 4-0 whitewashing of Kenyon.

Senior goalkeeper Georgina Klinzing (Gasport, NY/Royalton Hartland) ranks third in the nation with a save percentage of 94.1 and a goals against average of 0.33. She spearheads a scoring defense that easily tops the NCAC and ranks second in the nation.

Offensively, Ciaran Kisling (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) leads all freshman in the NCAC with six goals in seven games. And junior Emily Duh (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley), who assisted on the only goal of the game against Denison and distributed two more assists in the win over Kenyon, picked up NCAC Player of the Week honors for her play last week.

September 26, 2001-

The field hockey Tigers started the 2000 season 6-0 en route to one of the finest seasons in school history that included winning a share of the NCAC title and claiming the KIT/NCAC Mideast Regional Tournament. In what is shaping up to be a case of deja vu, the Tigers have gotten off to another great start at 5-0 in 2001, heading into a showdown with Denison, the team that tied Wittenberg atop the conference standings a year ago.

Wittenberg has shut out four of its five opponents thus far, yielding only a pair of goals in an important early-season 3-2 victory at Wooster on Sept. 8. The Tigers' latest shutout win came on Saturday over visiting Oberlin, 1-0.

In that game, freshman Blair Ufer (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored her first collegiate goal with just 8:16 remaining in the game.

Sophomore Barb Keselman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and freshman Ciaran Kisling (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) have three goals apiece to show the way on offense. Spearheaded by juniors Rebecca Russ (Lousville, Ky./Sacred Heart) and Heather House (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and senior goalkeeper Georgina Klinzing (Gasport, NY/Royalton Hartland), the Tiger defense did not yield a single shot on goal in a 2-0 win over Rhodes and leads the conference in goals allowed.

September 12, 2001-

The Wittenberg field hockey team has moved out to a 4-0 season-opening record for a second consecutive year. To open the 2000 season, the Tigers won their first six games under first-year head coach Marianne Beshara.

In 2001, Wittenberg has shut out three of its four opponents, yielding only a pair of goals in an important early-season 3-2 victory at Wooster on Sept. 8. The Tigers also have a 1-0 shutout over DePauw, a 3-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan and a 2-0 whitewashing of Rhodes to their credit.

On offense, sophomore Barb Keselman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and freshman Ciaran Kisling (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) have three goals apiece to show the way. The defense, spearheaded by junior backs Rebecca Russ (Lousville, Ky./Sacred Heart) and Heather House (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and senior goalkeeper Georgina Klinzing (Gasport, NY/Royalton Hartland), did not yield a single shot on goal in Friday's victory.
