25th Annual Hewlett Packard Division III
All-America Football Team Announced FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 18, 2002 CONTACT: Mike Andriatch, Executive Director BROCKPORT, N.Y. - A total of 115 players from 69 schools, including three from Wittenberg, were named to the 2002 Hewlett Packard Division III All-America Football Team on Wednesday. The 25th annual, silver anniversary team was selected by a panel of 29 sports information directors representing the four playoff regions in NCAA Division III. Voters made first-, second-, and third-team selections with candidates receiving points on a 25-15-10 scale. In addition to the top three teams, players who received 100 or more points earned honorable mention status. Mount Union (OH) College and Trinity (TX) University, the two teams that will meet for the NCAA Division III Championship this Saturday in Salem, VA, both placed five players on the team. St. John's (MN) University, which lost to Trinity in the national semifinals, also had five representatives on the team. Wittenberg placed Dustin Goldsbury on the second team and John Hauser and Chad Thompson on the third team. Five players repeated from 2001 as first-team All-Americans: quarterback Roy Hampton of Trinity (TX) University; tight end Ryan Short of Wabash (IN) College; offensive tackle Michael Day of Bridgewater (VA) College; defensive end Steven Wilson of King's (PA) College; and punter Scott Verhalen of East Texas Baptist University. The ballot included 377 players representing 147 of the 228 NCAA Division III (non-scholarship) football-playing institutions. Teams with two or fewer losses were allowed five nominations; teams .500 or better could nominate up to three players; and schools finishing below .500 were allotted two nominations. 2002 Hewlett Packard Division III All-America Football Team FIRST TEAM
