Wittenberg Places 25th At Loaded Jekyll Island Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - The Wittenberg Tigers stepped into the big-time of NCAA Division III golf and came away with a 25th place finish in the Jekyll Island Invitational, hosted by Oglethorpe College.

It was Wittenberg's first competititon since the end of the fall 2007 season, and it included many of the top teams in the division. Even with the overall team finish, Wittenberg picked up several solid individual performances.

Perhaps most encouraging was the finish turned in by freshman Duncan Littlefield (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), who shot two rounds under 80 and finished with a team-best 238, good for 82nd place in a field of more than 140 golfers. He was 22 strokes off the lead, thanks in large part to his second-day 76, which was his best round as a collegian.

Next up was junior Chad Summe (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), who placed 106th with a three-day score of 244.

The Tigers' finish could have been better, but junior Garrett Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) did not finish the tournament after shooting 73 and 75 on the first two days. He was among the top 15 individuals in the tournament heading into the final round.
