Intramural Basketball Rules


Regular NCAA Rules will apply except for the following:

  • Playing time will be two 12-minute halves with one 3-minute halftime.

  • Each team is allowed two 30-second time outs per game.

  • Tie games will result in two minute overtime during tournament play only.

  • During overtime, each team is allowed one time out.

  • The clock will be stopped only during time outs and after every whistle during the last two minutes of each half.

  • Five minutes prior to the scheduled game time, all players must sign in with the official scorekeeper. Only those players present at the start of the game should be listed on the game sheet - late arrivals may be added. All players must be on the Official team roster in the intramural office and listed on the official scoresheet in order to participate. All players must present a valid Wittenberg ID at all Intramural contests..

  • A team will forfeit the game if they do not have three eligible players on the court. The game clock will begin at the scheduled game time. If teams are waiting for players, the clock will be running.

    A Team must have a minimum of two women on the court at all times.

  • Bonus will be applied after five team fouls per half.

  • Players must wear appropriate footwear and apparel - no long pants or street clothes.

  • Players are not permitted to wear equipment such as elbow pads, hand guards, casts, etc.

  • All open wounds must be adequately covered - no player with an open wound or bloody wound will be permitted on the court. Clothing saturated by blood must be removed from playing area. Ice is provided by the Intramural Department for emergencies. Adhesive bandages and tape are the responsibility of the individual participant.

  • All games will begin with a coin toss. The team winning the toss will begin the first half with the ball at half court. The team not winning the toss will start the alternating process and begin the second half with possession of the ball.

  • A substitution may only occur on a dead ball and then only when the player has reported to the scorer's table and been motioned in by the officials. Illegal substitution will result in one warning followed by a technical foul.

  • Players are required to raise their hand after committing a foul and state their name to the scorer's table.

  • Intentional fouls and technical fouls will result in two free throws and the ball out of bounds nearest the spot of the foul.

  • Technical fouls will be assessed to the individual and the team and will result in ejection from the game.

  • Players are not allowed to Slam-Dunk: violation will result in a Technical Foul & Ejection.

  • Officials' judgments are final. Protests regarding eligibility of players must be made in writing on the game score sheet and reported to the officials prior to the start of the game.

  • Any team with repeated sportsmanship offenses, repeated use of foul language or unruly spectators may be eliminated from the league.
