Intramural Floor Hockey Rules
redline
  • A game will be two 15-minute halves running time, except in the last two minutes of the second half. During the last two minutes of the second half, the clock will stop on all whistles.

  • All players must wear appropriate athletic footwear - no sandals or bare feet. All hats must be removed for competition. No casts or exposed braces that may harm other participants are allowed.

  • Any ball that goes over the boards or up on the stage is out of bounds.

  • When the ball is sent out of bounds by a team, play will resume with a pass on the corner pass in marks closest to where the ball went out of bounds by the opposing team.

  • When a foul occurs and play will resume with a pass in on the spot, all players must be a minimum of 5 yards away on the pass.

  • The ball may only be played with the stick, not the feet, hands or body - with the exception of the goalie in the goal box area.

  • The goalie may touch the ball with his or her hands or body but only in the goal box area.

  • The goalie may leave the goal box area and play as a regular player.

  • The goalie may wear protective eyewear, kneepads, and use a baseball glove in the goal box area; additional protective equipment that enhances the size of the goalie's body will not be permitted.

  • The goalie may not clear the ball from the goal box area over the center line.

  • Only the goalie is allowed in the goal box area. If any portion of the opponent's stick or body enters the goal box area, the official will whistle the play dead and the goalie will be awarded the ball for a free pass. In the event a goal is scored followed by a violation of the goal box area, the goal will be called back. If any members of the goalie's team enter the goal box area during play, the official will whistle the play dead and the opponent will be awarded a pass in from the corner pass in marks.

  • Goals may only be scored from a shot taken in the offensive half of the court. A goal may not be scored directly from a pass in - the ball must touch one other stick on the pass in situation.

  • Slashing, butt ending, elbowing, charging, rough checking, body checking, high sticking, slide tackles, and stick throwing will not be tolerated! All above fouls will result in a 4 minute penalty. The player will leave the game and stay by the scorer at the stage, and the offending team will play short during this time period. Any individual player who has two 4 minute penalties in one game will not be eligible for the next game!

  • Abusive or foul language and unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. Individuals will be ejected from the game and must leave the premises.

  • Each team is allowed one time out per half. The time out is one minute in length.

  • Substitution is unlimited and may take place in a dead ball situation only. All substitutes must be motioned onto the floor by an official. During co-ed play at least three women must be on the playing floor at all times.

  • Regular season games may end in a tie. Playoff games will have one five-minute overtime. Following the first overtime period, a sudden death overtime of three minutes will be played. If the game is still tied following the sudden death overtime, a penalty shoot out will occur.

  • Excessive bending of the stick blades will not be tolerated. Only those sticks supplied by the intramural department will be legal for play.

  • The mercy rule will be in effect with 3 minutes remaining in the game; if a team is ahead by a margin of 4 or more goals, the game will be called by the officials.
