Alma Pulls Away From Mount St. Joseph To Win
Consolation Game Of Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Alma Scots outscored the Mount St. Joseph Lions 14-6 over the final eight minutes of the first half and then held on for a 59-48 victory in the consolation game of the 2008 Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic at Wittenberg University's Pam Evans Smith Arena.
The win moved Alma, which lost to Wisconsin-Oshkosh in a semifinal game on Monday, to 2-7 on the 2008-09 season. Mount St. Joseph, which lost to the host Tigers in the other semifinal Monday, dropped to 2-7.
The Lions led 17-16 on a three-pointer by Gina Gonzales, but they were held scoreless for more than five minutes as Alma built a 25-17 lead. After taking a 29-23 lead into the locker room at halftime, the Scots successfully held off the Lions, who closed to within one point on a Whitney Thomas three-pointer with 9:07 remaining. Over the next eight minutes, Alma went on a 16-1 run to close out the game.
Alma showed tremendous balance on the final stats sheet, led by 10 points each from Lacey Best-Rowden and Aubrey Maxa. Best-Rowden added five assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Mount St. Joseph, which committed eight more turnovers in the game than Alma, was paced offensively by Gonzales with 12 points and Carolyn Holt with 10 points, both off the bench. The Lions got just eight points from players in their starting lineup.
