The Wittenberg men's and women's cross country teams will put the wraps on the 2004 season at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional meet hosted by Alma College on Saturday. If any Tiger runners are able to substantially drop their times this weekend and qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship meet, they would advance to race at Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Nov. 20. Just one athlete in Wittenberg history has reached the national meet - Abi Gerstle in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

In the North Coast Athletic Conference championship meet on Oct. 30 at Allegheny, the Tiger men finished ninth out of 10 teams and the Tiger women came in eighth out of nine teams. For the men, freshman Mike Echols (Springfield, Ohio/North) led the way with a 28th-place with a time of 28.54. Junior Chris Petrik (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) captured 47th in 29:45, freshman Shawn Hils (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) took 57th in 30:55, freshman Jon Dewald (Mansfield, Ohio/Senior) chipped in with 60th in 31:49 and freshman David Wallingford (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) rounded out the scorers with a time of 31:53, good for 61st place.

For the women, freshman Mary Beth Lintz (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont) paced the Tigers once again, putting her atop the team's finishers in all but one race this season. She took 48th place in 26:54. Freshman Alissa Goble (Sunfield, Mich./Lakewood) took 50th in 27:11, sophomore Sarah Yehle (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) finished 51st in 28:03, sophomore Meredith Deitsch (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) wound up 52nd in 28:03 and junior Megan O'Neil (Carroll, Ohio/Bloom-Carroll) rounded out the scorers with a time of 28:11, good for 54th.

The Wittenberg men's and women's cross country teams may be extremely young, but they are turning in some solid performances in the early going of the 2004 season. Last weekend at the Maroon Invitational at Roanoke College, the Tiger men finished third out of nine teams and the Tiger women placed fifth out of eight teams.

Both teams were led by individuals who had fine performances. For the men, the leader for a second straight meet was freshman Mike Echols (Springfield, Ohio/North), who placed sixth out of 66 runners with a time of 29:27. He was followed by freshman David Wallingford (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) in 14th place in 30:02, freshman Mike Wismer (Avon, Ohio/Avon) in 16th in 30:29, freshman Shawn Hils (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) in 17th in 30:35 and freshman Jon Dewald (Mansfield, Ohio/Senior) in 22nd in 31:08.

For the women, the top finishers were also mostly freshmen, starting with Mary Beth Lintz (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont), who placed 14th in 21:29. Also finishing in the top 35 and scoring points toward the team total were sophomore Sarah Yehle (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) in 22nd in 22:25, freshman Alissa Goble (Sunfield, Mich./Lakewood) in 23rd in 22:33, sophomore Meredith Deitsch (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) in 32nd in 23:19 and senior Lindsay Veit (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) in 35th in 23:29.

The Wittenberg men's and women's cross country teams have gotten just one meet in so far this season, thanks to flooding rains that soaked Marietta, Ohio, last weekend. In that one meet, Wittenberg's young teams posted quite a few strong times while leading the team to first-place finishes in the Wittenberg Invitational on Sept. 11.

In both events, Wittenberg defeated Ohio Valley College and a club team representing Ohio Dominican University. For the men, freshman Mike Echols (Springfield, Ohio/North) was the first Tigers finisher in a time of 29:03. Freshman David Wallingford (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) and junior Chris Petrik (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) also broke the 30-minute mark as Wittenberg captured the top seven places in the race.

On the women's side, a pair of freshmen led the Tigers and also finished with sub-22 minute times. Alissa Goble (Sunfield, Mich./Lakewood) and Mary Beth Lintz (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont) were third and fourth in times of 21:30.97 and 21:37.67, respectively.

After the unexpected week off, the Tigers are on the road this week at Roanoke College in Virginia.
