The late-game surge came just four days after the Tigers lost out on a golden opportunity against visiting Kenyon. Tied 5-5 going into the fourth quarter of that game, the Tigers were outscored 5-0 in the final frame of a 10-5 loss. The win over W&J moved Wittenberg back above the .500 mark at 5-4.
The Tigers played an outstanding first half to take a 5-1 lead through halftime, but the Presidents battled back with a 4-1 edge in third quarter scores. Wittenberg pulled away in the fourth as freshman Jeff Capella (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) scored three of his game-high four goals.
Offensively, freshman Tim Gates (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added two goals and an assist, wile freshman Ted Winders (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) and junior Mike Provost (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) contributed a goal and an assist apiece.
The Tiger defensive effort was spearheaded by senior Pat Garlock (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles) with 11 saves in goal. Provost and Gates led with seven ground balls each.
The Tigers have three games remaining in the 2007 season in which to apply the winning formula of Saturday's game, starting with a home date Wednesday against perennial conference powerhouse Ohio Wesleyan.
