Wittenberg at Kenyon, April 4, 1998

Wittenberg took its three-game winning streak on the road to Kenyon looking to increase its standing in the NCAC. Wittenberg dug itself into a hole by allowing Kenyon to score four unanswered goals in the first quarter. Kenyon's defense was strong and had excellent pressure against the The Tiger offense causing them to turn the ball over. Kenyon's offense was moving well off-ball and Wittenberg's defense was slow to react.

The second quarter saw Kenyon score two more goals on a transition. Wittenberg's Jeff Collins finally got the Tigers on the board with a goal assisted by Billy Habermeyer. Collins scored again assisted by Shawn Egan. Wittenberg's offense was still inconsistent but the defense began to settle down and held Kenyon scoreless for the rest of the second quarter. The score at the half was Kenyon 6-2.

In the third quarter the Tiger offense started to get on track taking 12 shots and scoring two goals. David Roth scored unassisted by picking a ball off on a ride. Habermeyer scored, assisted by Mario Cassani.

Wittenberg's defense continued to play strong allowing Kenyon to score only once. Wittenberg's man-down defense held Kenyon scoreless on three man-up opportunities. The score at the end of three was Kenyon 7-3.

The fourth quarter was dominated by Wittenberg. The defense began to pressure Kenyon's offense, creating turnovers and allowing the Tigers to score on transition. Wittenberg's offense continued to score with three goals from Collins assisted by Dan Hillerich, Cassani and Roth. Eric Clapp had a unassisted goal to tie the game at eight-all with 2:25 remaining in the game causing Kenyon to use a timeout.

Kenyon had the first opportunity to go ahead but Wittenberg's defense held strong. The Tigers had the ball on their defensive half of the field and began to clear the ball but turned the ball over at the midfield line and Kenyon took possession and scored on a fast break with one minute to go.

Wittenberg had an opportunity to tie the game with 30 seconds to go but couldnŐt get a shot off. The game ended with Kenyon in front 9-8. It was a tough loss for the Tigers but they battled back to tie the game and came up short at the end. Goalie Mike Oliver had a solid game with 15 saves. Cassani led the Tigers in ground balls with six followed by Roth with five.

The coaching staff wishes to thank James and Barbara Steinbeck for providing post-game refreshments and snacks.
