The Tiger men’s lacrosse team completed the 2003 season with a pair of nonconference losses last week to NCAC opponents. On Wednesday, Wittenberg was defeated 19-10 by Kenyon on the road and on Saturday, the Tigers dropped a 13-5 decision at home to Wooster.

Against Kenyon, Wittenberg was outscored 12-0 in the second and third periods before rallying with eight goals in the fourth quarter. Too little, too late, however, as the rally fell nine goals short. Freshman Andy Joly (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) scored three goals and one assist and freshman Mike Sweeney (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) added a pair of tallies.

Against Wooster on Senior Day at Edwards-Maurer Field, Wittenberg fell behind 5-0 in the first quarter and also gave up four fourth-quarter goals to account for the final eight-goal margin. The Tigers were paced offensively by junior Andy Buck (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) with two goals and senior Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) with one goal and two assists.

The Tiger men’s lacrosse team dropped its fourth straight game last week, and for the second straight time it was nationally ranked Ohio Wesleyan doing the job. Eight days after the Bishops, the undefeated conference champion for 2003, beat Wittenberg at Edwards-Maurer Field by a score of 20-0, the result was an 18-4 decision. Wittenberg did get a fine offensive performance out of freshman attacker Mike Sweeney (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill), who scored a career-high three goals in the loss.

The 2003 season concludes this week with nonconference games against Kenyon and Wooster. The Lords defeated Wittenberg in Springfield 13-4 earlier this season in an NCAC game, while Wooster was an 11-5 winner over the Tigers in an NCAC game hosted by the Scots earlier this season.

The home game on Saturday against Wooster will be the final home game for five Tiger seniors - Chris Kothe (Grand Rapids, Mich./East), Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit), Spencer Dunning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont), Ross Mellgren (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) and Wes Enicks (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley).

The Tiger men’s lacrosse team struggled through a tough week, falling 13-4 to Kenyon in an NCAC game on Wednesday and then losing 11-5 to Wooster in an NCAC game on Saturday. The losses guaranteed the Tigers no better than a fifth-place finish in the conference standings.

Against Kenyon, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but were outscored 13-1 in the second and third stanzas. Freshman Mike Sweeney (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) finished with two goals to lead the Tiger offense, while junior goaltender Kyle Prussing (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) made six saves.

Against Wooster, senior Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) and junior Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) had two goals apiece. But the Tigers dug themselves a 10-2 hole before coming alive in the fourth quarter for three goals.

This week, the Tigers will face the same nationally ranked opponent twice. A twice re-scheduled home game against Ohio Wesleyan is slated for Tuesday at Edwards-Maurer Field, and the return game, which will not count toward the conference standings, is on the docket for Saturday.

The Tiger men’s lacrosse team worked its way above the .500 mark with a 2-1 week that included a 15-2 loss at perennial conference powerhouse Denison on Tuesday, a 12-4 victory over Marietta on Wednesday and a 16-0 shutout over Oberlin on Saturday.

The highlight of the week was clearly the offensive performance by sophomore Trevor Carlson (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), who scored eight goals and added two assists for a total of 10 points against Oberlin. He had six goals in the first game between the two teams as well. In the most recent win over Oberlin, freshman Andy Joly (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) added four goals and two assists in the Oberlin victory.

In the loss to Denison, one of the preseason conference favorites, the Tigers got goals from juniors Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Eric Stenholm (Hinsdale, Ill./Central), and assists from senior Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) and Joly.

In the win over Marietta, the Tigers scored three goals in each of the four periods to slowly pull away from the Pioneers in a game played at Mariemont High School in Cincinnati. Patterson showed the way on offense with three goals and two assists, while senior Spencer Dunning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont), Carlson and Joly each scored twice.

Patterson and Carlson rank sixth in the NCAC in scoring with 23 total points (3.29 per game) each. Carlson’s 19 goals in seven games put him fourth in the conference in that category at 2.71 per game. Patterson is fifth in assists at 1.43 per outing after 10 helpers in seven games.

This is a big week for the Tigers as they take on Kenyon on Wednesday and Wooster on Saturday in a pair of NCAC contests. Last year’s games with both teams were extremely close.

The Tiger men’s lacrosse team has won two straight games and now heads into the heart of the 2003 schedule with three interesting games this week.

Starting things off is a rescheduled contest at Denison, the defending NCAC champion, on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Tigers will play Marietta at Mariemont High School in Cincinnati. And action concludes this week with a conference game at Oberlin, a team the Tigers walloped 18-1 in nonconference action on March 22.

Last week, the Tigers won their lone game at Washington & Jefferson 11-4 on Wednesday. Freshman Andy Joly (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) led the offense with three goals, while senior Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) and sophomore Trevor Carlson (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) added two tallies each. The Presidents managed just seven shots on goal in the game, compared to 17 by the Tigers.

The Tiger men’s lacrosse team has posted mixed results so far in 2003, losing a pair of Spring Break trip games in Virginia to traditional national powers Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan before returning home and whipping Oberlin in a nonconference game at home on Saturday.

The season’s opening was delayed due to old man winter, which caused a March 1 game against Ohio Wesleyan to be postponed until April 15, a March 2 against Whittier to be cancelled and a March 19 game against Denison to be moved to April 1.

Against Randolph-Macon, the Tigers fell behind 6-2 by halftime and couldn’t make up enough ground in the second half, losing 14-10. Junior Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and senior Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) scored three goals each and junior goalkeeper Kyle Prussing (New Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) turned away nine shots.

Against Virginia Wesleyan, the Tigers again fell behind early, this time trailing 15-3 by halftime, en route to a 22-7 defeat. Prussing faced 46 opposing shots, turning away 10, while the offense was led by Patterson and freshman Cory Windle (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) with two goals each.

Against Oberlin, the Tigers controlled the action throughout in claiming the comfortable victory. Sophomore Trevor Carlson (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) scored five goals and Patterson added three tallies as Wittenberg outshot its visitors 37-12.

Jim Kelley
The Wittenberg men’s lacrosse program welcomes Head Coach Vinnie Lang’s third recruiting class in 2003, a strong group of 11 new players that he hopes will blend in well with 13 returning letterwinners. Finding the right mixture of talent and experience will be a key to righting the ship after the Tigers posted a 5-11 overall record and 2-3 mark in the North Coast Athletic Conference in 2002.

Leading the charge on offense this year will be the Tigers’ top point-scorer from 2002, senior attacker Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./Desmet Jesuit), who finished with 52 points on 23 goals and 29 assists. He will be joined on the attack by sophomore Trevor Carlson (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), who came on strong in his first season to score 10 goals and six assists, junior Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), who finished with 14 goals and 12 assists in 2002, and senior Spencer Dunning (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont), who chipped in four goals and four assists.

Dunning and Rydquist are the top returners in the midfield, but the cupboard is anything but bare with juniors Andy Buck (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), Eric Stenholm (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) and David Marks (Houston, Texas/The Pomfret School) and seniors Ross Mellgren (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) and Wes Enicks (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) among the other returning letterwinners in that section of the field. All three players saw action in at least 15 games, with Buck ranking among the team leaders in ground balls.

On defense, two players stand out immediately. Junior defender Jim Kelley (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), a first-team All-NCAC selection a year ago, returns to anchor the defensive backfield. In goal, junior Kyle Prussing (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) was one of the top players in the NCAC as he finished with a saves percentage of 57.3 in 480 minutes of action. After sharing time last year with two other since departed student-athletes, Prussing heads into the 2003 campaign as the clear No. 1, but Wittenberg is blessed with adequate support at the position in freshman Kevin Adams (Medina, Ohio/Medina).

Rounding things out on defense, sophomore Bill Fortune (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South) and junior Andy Labarre (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) are also returning letterwinners.
