Against Wooster, sophomore Cory Windle (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) finished with three goals to run his season total to 30. He was tied for team honors in goals and led the team with 48 total points. After playing the Scots tough in the first half and trailing just 5-2 at halftime, the Tigers couldn't keep pace in the final 30 minutes. Wooster scored four unanswered in the third quarter and outscored Wittenberg 8-2 in the second half overall.
For the season, Wittenberg's record is truly deceiving. The Tigers were only outscored 175-159, and Wittenberg actually outscored its foes in two of the quarters cumulatively. Just two of the team's 12 losses were by more than five goals, and three were by one goal.
Senior Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) was second on the team with 46 points and tied for first in goals with 30. Both Rydquist and Windle ranked among the NCAC leaders in both categories. Four Tiger players finished with 39 or more points: Rydquist, Windle, freshman Adam Morrison (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) with 43 points, including a team-leading 21 assists and freshman Sammy Hong (Dublin, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), who had 28 goals and 11 assists for 39 total points.
Senior Kyle Prussing (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) was the mainstay in goal for the Tigers as he started all 16 games. His save percentage was an outstanding .575.

Throughout the season, the Tigers have been oh-so-close to pulling off victories against quality opponents, but with the exception of a 12-11 NCAC win over Kenyon on April 7, Wittenberg has come up short every time. The latest examples were an 11-10 overtime loss to defending NCAC champion Ohio Wesleyan on April 21, a 14-8 defeat against Colorado College on April 25 and a 16-15 loss to Kenyon in nonconference action on April 27. All three games were played on the Tigers' home turf at Edwards-Maurer Field.
They were the last three appearances for the team's five seniors: attacker Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), goalkeeper Kyle Prussing (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle), midfielder Andy Buck (Dublin, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), defender Jim Kelley (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and long stick middie Andy Labarre (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer). Labarre missed the last half of the season after suffering a knee injury.
In the loss to Ohio Wesleyan, one of three teams currently tied for first place in the NCAC, the Tigers had their chances. Wittenberg led much of the game, and three fourth-quarter goals put the Tigers up one in the waning moments. But Ohio Wesleyan scored the equalizer with 37 seconds left and then got a "golden goal" in overtime to pull off the victory.
The offensive star of the game was sophomore Cory Windle (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), who had a career-high six goals. Freshman Cory Griffiths (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) added two goals and freshman Adam Morrison (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) contributed three assists. Prussing made 14 saves in the game while facing a 43-shot barrage from the Bishops.
Against Colorado College, a bad third quarter was the story, as it has been on several other occasions this season. Trailing just 6-4 at the halftime intermission, Wittenberg was outscored 8-4 in the second half, including by a 5-1 margin in the third quarter. Griffiths, Rydquist and Morrison had two goals apiece and freshman Sammy Hong (Dublin, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) chipped in with two assists.
Against Kenyon, the game went back and forth throughout before the Lords scored three straight fourth-quarter goals to take what turned out to be an insurmountable 16-14 lead. Freshman Jay Shimko (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) scored the game's final goal with eight seconds remaining, but there wasn't enough time for the Tigers to mount a realistic threat on the Kenyon goal after that.
Rydquist finished wtih four goals and Griffiths, Morrison, Windle and Hong added two scores each. Buck scored the game's first goal just seven seconds into play, which is believed to be a Wittenberg record.
Wittenberg wraps up the season at Wooster on Saturday. The Scots, also tied for first in the NCAC currently, defeated Wittenberg 10-5 in Springfield on April 10 after the game was tied 4-4 at halftime.

With two weeks remaining in the season, the Tigers are 4-8 overall and 2-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, but more importantly, Wittenberg is 3-1 in its last four games over the last two weeks. Four games remain on the schedule, beginning with tonight's showdown with perennial powerhouse Ohio Wesleyan.
On April 7 against Kenyon, the Tigers picked up their biggest win of the season, rallying past the Lords in an NCAC game, 12-11. Freshmen Adam Morrison (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), Sammy Hong (Dublin, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), Cory Griffiths (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Jay Shimko (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and senior Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) all had multi-goal games. Down 7-3 at halftime, the Tigers scored all six goals in the third period to take a 9-7 lead into the final frame.Kenyon tied it with two goals before Hong, Shimko and Griffiths scored to give the Tigers just enough cushion.
On April 10, the Tigers had no such rally in them as Wooster took a 10-5 decision at Edwards-Maurer Field. The two teams were tied at four at halftime before the Scots, who are one of three teams in the NCAC with just one loss currently, took control and scored six of the seven goals in the second half. Sophomore Cory Windle (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) scored two goals in the game and freshman Matt Davis (Medina, Ohio/Medina) added a goal and assist, while the Tiger defense did a stellar job, led by freshman Brandon Schwind (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) with nine ground balls and senior goalkeeper Kyle Prussing (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) with 15 saves.
On April 14, the Tigers traveled to Oberlin and escaped with an 8-7 win. After falling behind 4-0, Wittenberg rallied to tie the game at four by halftime and then escape with the win on a fourth-quarter goal by Morrison, off an assist from Rydquist.
Finally, the Tigers padded their stats in a 21-6 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson on April 17. That margin improved the Tigers scoring differential to a surprising 122-121 in Wittenberg's favor. Freshman Travis Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Wellington) scored five goals in the victory and Rydquist finished with six points on one goal and five assists.
Rydquist ranks second in the NCAC in points per game at 3.17 and Hong is second in the latest conference statistics in goals per game at 2.17. Rydquist, Hong, Windle and Morrison all have more than 30 points on the season.

| Sammy Hong |
Against Greensboro, the host team scored four straight goals in the second period to break a 5-5 tie. The Tigers never closed the gap to any less than three goals after that.
Freshman Sammy Hong (Worthington, Ohio/Kilbourne) led Wittenberg's offense with three goals, and freshman Jay Shimko (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) added two more. Six different players scored goals and four different players finished with one assist apiece.
Against Guilford, the Tigers rallied from a 13-7 deficit to score five straight goals in the fourth quarter and pull within one. But the host team tacked on an insurance goal with 59 seconds remaining to seal it.
Hong had three goals again and senior Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) finished with four tallies. Senior Trevor Carlson (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) added two goals in his best performance of the season. Three players - freshman Cory Griffiths (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), freshman Adam Morrison (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and sophomore Cory Windle (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) - each chipped in with two assists.
Against Denison, a perennial North Coast Athletic Conference power, the Tigers were in prime position to pull off the upset. Wittenberg scored twice in the third quarter to pull even at 3-3, but the visiting Big Red stunned the Tigers with two goals in the final 25 seconds of the stanza to break the game open. Denison added three more goals to open the fourth quarter and then staved off a late Tiger rally to claim the win and drop Wittenberg to 1-2 in the NCAC.
Windle had three goals and senior goaltender Kyle Prussing (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) had a stellar game in net with 10 saves.
The Tigers have a week off to lick their wounds and prepare for conference rival Kenyon on April 7.

In the last two weeks, the Tigers have played four games, starting with a 12-7 loss at home to St. Vincent on March 6. In that game, freshman Adam Morrison (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) finished with three goals and one assist, freshman Sammy Hong (Dublin, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) added two goals and one assist and sophomore Cory Windle (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) chipped in with one goal and two assists. The Tigers played very evenly with the visitors, but they couldn't recover from an early 4-0 deficit.
The team's annual spring break trip involved games at Randolph-Macon on March 10 and St. Mary's on March 13. The Tigers lost a pair of heartbreakers, 11-10 to Randolph-Macon and 10-8 to St. Mary's, after leading in the second half of both games.
Against Randolph-Macon, the Tigers led 7-6 in the third quarter and rallied with a pair of goals in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 10. But the host team scored the game-winner with 2:50 remaining.
Hong finished with four goals and one assist, senior Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added three goals and one assist and Windle contributed one goal and three assists. Senior Kyle Prussing (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) made 13 saves in goal for the Tigers.
In the loss to St. Mary's, Wittenberg took an early 3-0 lead and still held an 8-7 advantage after Rydquist scored career-best fifth goal of the game with 7:14 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the host team scored the last three goals of the game, all in a span of two minutes, to steal the win. Prussing finished with 14 saves.
The Tigers got things back on track on March 20 with a home 15-4 NCAC victory over Oberlin. The win moved Wittenberg's overall record to 1-4 and evened the team's NCAC record at 1-1.
Rydquist was again the offensive story for the Tigers as he scored four goals. Windle also finished with four goals, and he added an assist. Also getting into the scoring act multiple times were Hong with two goals and two assists, freshman Travis Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Wellington) with two goals and Morrison with three assists.
In recognition of his outstanding performance in the two games last week, Rydquist earned NCAC Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
The Tigers now take to the road - Tobacco Road that is - for games at Greensboro and Guilford in North Carolina this weekend. Then it's back home for three straight NCAC games against Denison, Kenyon and Wooster that will make or break the Tigers' season.

In the opening game of the 2004 season, the Tigers showed signs of why hopes are high for this season and beyond. In a 14-9 loss at No. 8 Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday, Wittenberg hung tough against an outfit that claimed a 20-0 whitewashing at Edwards-Maurer Field just one year ago.
In the loss, freshman attacker Sammy Hong (Worthington, Ohio/Kilbourne) was one of several players who made an outstanding collegiate debuts as he recorded four goals and two assists. He was backed offensively by sophomore Cory Windle (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) with two goals and freshman Adam Morrison (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) with one goal and two assists.
On attack, senior Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) will be the leader after earning honorable mention All-NCAC at midfield as a junior. He is joined in the offensive zone by junior Trevor Carlson (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), an honorable mention all-conference attackman in 2003 and the team's top returning scorer after posting 26 points on 21 goals and five assists, Hong, the Ohio High School Division I Player of the Year in 2003, Morrison, freshman Matt Davis (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and freshman Travis Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Wellington).
In the midfield, senior captain Andy Buck (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) leads the pack. Windle and freshman Jay Shimko (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids), a first-team All-Michigan choice as a high school senior in 2003, round out the first midfield. In addition, sophomore Mike Morrell (Ballwin, Mo./CBC) and freshmen Cory Griffiths (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) and Eric Gooch (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls), make up the second unit.
Senior long stick middie Andy LaBarre (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) will anchor a youthful defensive midfield. Freshmen Kevin Owens (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), Carl Spilly (Indianapolis, Ind./Park Tudor), Matt Wilcox (St. Louis, Mo./CBC), Jansen Wehrley (Medina, Ohio/Medina), Andy Murschel (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and Greg Mustric (Worthington-Kilbourne) all will be counted on to contribute in 2004.
Defensively, the leader is Jim Kelley (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), a first-team all-conference selection in 2001. Junior Bill Fortune (Grosse Point, Mich./South) and sophomore Jon Smiley (Worthington, Ohio/Kilbourne), a second-team all-conference choice a year ago, also return. Expected to see action are sophomore Dan Arnold (Summit, NJ/Summit) and freshmen Mark Morrell (Ballwin, Mo./CBC), Brandon Schwind (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and George Tafel (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier). Senior Kyle Prussing (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) is the incumbent starter in goal after a strong junior year in which he garnered Honorable Mention All-NCAC honors.
The Tigers have another home game this weekend as St. Vincent comes calling on Saturday. That will be followed by a Spring Break road trip that includes games at Randolph-Macon and St. Mary's (Md.).
