Wittenberg at Wingate, March 8, 2000



The Tigers opened the 2000 season on the road during their spring break trip in Hilton Head, SC. The first game of the season was against Wingate, NC. Wingate scored 2 goals in the first quarter. The defense played well. Wittenberg's offense had scoring opportunities in the first quarter, but they could not connect. Wingate led at the end of the first quarter 2-0.

Wingate scored a third goal before Wittenberg got on the board with an unassisted goal by Alex Nichols. Wingate scored again to take a 4-1 lead into halftime.

The Tiger defense continued to play well and held Wingate to 2 goals in the third. Wittenberg's offense got on track in the third scoring 3 goals. Shawn Egan, David Lowry and Alex Nichols each had a goal. The Tigers trailed 6-4 at the end of the third quarter.

Wittenberg couldn't hold Wingate on the fourth quarter. They scored 5 goals. The Tigers scored another goal at the end of the fourth. Jesse Mortillo scored, assisted by Mark Azar. Wingate won the game 11-5.

Shawn Egan led the Tigers in groundballs with 6; Dan Hillerich followed with 5. Charlie Hamilton started his first game in goal and played 3 quarters with 16 saves. Bill Hamlin played the fourth quarter and had 5 saves. Wittenberg is 0-1.
