Tigers Open Trip Abroad A Tie

CHESTER, England — A day after the Wittenberg Men's Soccer Team toured the headquarters and home stadium of world-renowned professional football franchise Manchester United, which Head Coach Steve Dawson described as "quite an eye-opener for the lads," the Tigers played their first game of the trip.

Overcoming some early jitters, the Tigers tied Witton Albion 1-1 at Crewe and Alsager College Complex. Wittenberg's goal came from Brian Glenn, with an assist from Justin Jenkins. Dawson described it as a "Good hard game - they were very physical but also technical."

"They knew a little too much for our guys and we were very nervous at first, but gradually got more into the game and had a number of good chances," he added.

The Tigers next play a strong men's amateur team from Liverpool at Chester College, then the team is off to London for 3 days, including an opportunity to see a professional match when Arsenal plays Fulham in their English Premier League opener.

Tigers Lose On Last-Second Goal

CHESTER, England — The Tigers wrapped up the opening leg of their trip to England with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to a team from Liverpool.

Twice during the game Wittenberg rallied from one-goal deficits, only to have the British squad pull back ahead, with the clinching goal coming with just five seconds left on the clock.

Shane Price scored Wittenberg's first goal and Matt Borland had the tally that tied the game at 2-2 in the second half. Dawson said the team played well against a quality opponent, and he indicated that he was pleased with the Tigers' performance overall, despite the loss.

After a few days in London, the Tigers will be back in action against a professional academy team in Chester last this week.

Tigers Shut Out By Top Premiership Academy Squad

CHESTER, England — The final score doesn't reflect it, but the Wittenberg Tigers held their own against an outstanding premiership academy team. Defensive breakdowns that were exploited by future professional British players were the Tigers' downfall in a 5-0 loss to Blackburn Ravens Youth Academy.

After 20 scoreless minutes, Blackburn got on the board and by halftime the Ravens had added a couple of goals to put the game out of reach. According to Head Coach Steve Dawson, Blackburn was "the best team that we will face all year."

A highlight for Wittenberg's players was the location of the game. The two teams squared off an immaculately maintained pitch on the grounds of the academy.

The finale of the Tigers' playing schedule on the trip to England is against a team in Knutsfordtown. The travelling party is scheduled to return to the United States on Aug. 17.

Tigers Wrap Up Trip With 3-3 Tie

KNUTSFORDTOWN, England — The Wittenberg Tigers put the wraps on an outstanding 2007 summer tour of England with a 3-3 tie against a team from Knutsfordtown.

According to Dawson, the Tigers played well and controlled much of the action. Goals were scored by Brian Dickman, Matt Borland and Jimmy Thinnes with assists coming from Justin Jenkins, Brian Glenn and Shane Price.

Dawson summed up the trip by saying that the players and coaches had thoroughly enjoyed the experience and had gained a great deal both as a team and individually from an educational standpoint.
