Tiger Men Hold Off Late Rally to Stay Perfect

Andy Sharek
ANGOLA, Ind. - For the third consecutive outing, the Tiger men's soccer team punched in four goals, and against Trine University (formerly Tri-State), they needed every one in a 4-3 win. Three different Tigers scored on the afternoon as Wittenberg moved to 4-0-0 on the young season and win the 2008 Ketner Invitational at Trine.

After falling behind for the first time all season, the Tigers leveled the match in the 20th minute on a goal by Matt Fleissner (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains). Just moments later, the Tigers found lightning with back to back strikes by Andy Sharek (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and Ryan Ruef (Plain City, OH/Jonathan Alder) to put the Tigers ahead 3-1 at the intermission.

Trine brought one back in the early stages of the second half, only to see the Tigers rebuild their two-goal edge on the eventual game-winning goal from Sharek off a feed from senior forward Matt Borland (Kettering, Ohio/Alter). In the late moments, the Tiger defense denied a frantic Trine rally to pick up the 4-3 victory.

On the afternoon, Wittenberg outshot the tournament hosts 18-13, despite losing a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Upcoming for Steve Dawson's men is their first home date of 2008, when they entertain the Thomas More Saints from Edwards-Maurer Field on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
