CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tiger swimming and diving teams split decisions in a dual meet with Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, the men winning by the slim margin of two points in a 112.5-110.5 final, and the women lost by the score of 115-124.
The men improved to 6-4 with the win, while the women dropped to 6-3 with the defeat. The small margins of victory, however, reflect a close competition in which one or two events could have changed the outcomes on either side.
After dropping the openings 400-yard medley relays on each side, the Tigers responded with wins from Kaitlin Clark (Wakeman, Ohio/Firelands) and Chris Culkin (Novi, Mich./Northville) in both 1000-yard freestyle races. Clark added a win in the 500-yard freestyle and swam the second leg of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.
For the women, Janna House (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Elgin Collegiate Institute), Kristin Elber (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick), and Megan Shubitowski (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) all contributed individual wins to the cause. The men received additional individual number one finishes from Neil Anderson (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood), Matt Higbee (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), and Matt Erenpreiss (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial). The first-place women's 400-yard freestyle relay included Clark, House, Elber, and Emily Ellerman (Littleton, Colo./Littleton). The men won the same event with a team comprised of Higbee, Brian Harris (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg), Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ohio/Senior), and Brandon Bock (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan).
The teams next prepare for a trip to men's and women's defending national champion Kenyon College on Friday, Feb. 1.
