The Wittenberg men's and women's swimming and diving teams were represented at the NCAA Division III championship meets, hosted by the College of Wooster at Miami University March 14-16 (women) and 21-23 (men), by senior Rachel Juergens (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) and sophomore SteveRader (Painesville, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius)

Rader, who also advanced to the national meet in 2001 and already holds six school records, made the biggest splash, finishing fourth in the 200-yard butterfly, good for All-America honors. Along with the national accolades, Rader's time of 1:52.41 was a personal best and a new school record. During the season, Rader's time dropped 12 full seconds, quite an astounding figure.

He also added a pair of Honorable Mention All-America finishes in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 butterfly. In the 200 IM, Rader had a personal best time of 1:53.39 en route to an 11-place finish. In the 100 fly, his 12th place finish was highlighted by a personal-best time of 50.65, which also was a school record. By scoring 26 points by himself in the national meet, Rader was unable to keep pace with perennial national champion Kenyon, but he did earn the Tigers' 25th place in the team competition.

Struggling to overcome the effects of the flu, Juergens, who holds 10 school records and qualified for nationals in 2001 as well, earned Honorable Mention All-America in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Her career-best time likely would have earned her a second straight All-America placement, but shewasn't healthy enough to put that together, finishing with a time of 17:42.03.She also competed in the 500-yard free and the 400-yard Individual Medley, but she didn't make the top 16 in either event.

Two Tiger swimmers have qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship Meet, both for a second year in a row. Senior Rachel Juergens (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) and sophomore Steve Rader (Painesville, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius) will both be competing in the championship meet, slated for March 14-16 for the women and March 21-23 for the men at Miami University.

Juergens has qualified for the NCAA meet in the 1650-yard freestyle, the 500 free and the 400 Individual Medley. Her times in the 500 free and 400 IM, which was a school record, are strong NCAA "B" cuts and are expected to stand up against the top times in the nation. In the 1650 free, she made an NCAA National automatic cut with a time of 17:24 at the NCAC Championship meet. Juergens has set no less than nine school records in her two years as a Tiger.

Rader captured a first place finish in the 200 IM at the NCAC meet and was the only Tiger swimmer to be an individual conference champion. In addition, Rader finished second in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 200 butterfly. He posted NCAA "B" cut times in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, both of which are expected to earn him an invitation to compete in the NCAA meet.

The Wittenberg swimming and diving teams are now officially in the home stretch of the 2001-02 season, and with just the NCAA Division III Championship Meet remaining, several swimmers are still awaiting word on their postseason fates.

Two Tiger swimmers have already qualified for the national meet, both for a second year in a row.

Rader captured a first place finish in the 200 IM at the NCAC meet and was the only Tiger swimmer to be an individual conference champion. In addition, Rader finished second in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 200 butterfly. He posted NCAA "B" cut times in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, both of which are expected to earn him an invitation to compete in the NCAA meet.<

Senior Paula Hauser (Mason, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame), an NCAA qualifier a year ago who finished sixth in the 200 breaststroke and seventh in the 100 breaststroke, both of which are NCAA "B" cut but are not expected to get her to nationals. Senior Melissa Beck (Williamsville, N.Y./Carmel (Ind.)) bettered her time in the 100 fly at last weekend's Case Western Reserve last chance meet to earn an NCAA "B" cut, but she also is not expected to advance for a second straight year.

Elizabeth Bradley (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) had a great meet at Case Western, swimming a lifetime-best time in the 1650 free and dropping 10 seconds in just one week. She is not, however, qualified for the NCAA meet.

Back on the men's side, senior Jeremy Lazarus (Moens, France/Ferney-Voltaire), a national qualifier a year ago, has made an NCAA "B" cut in the 100 breast, but he also is not expected to advance. And rounding things out, sophomore Alex Berger (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) finished fourth in the 100 breast at the NCAC meet and has a "B" cut in the event, but he also is not expected to move on.

The meet - which Head Coach Leslie Ramsey termed "outstanding" - was highlighted by the performances by senior Rachel Juergens (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) and sophomore Steve Rader (Painesville, Ohio/ClevelandSt. Ignatius), both of whom are almost assured of qualifying for the NCAA Division III championship meet for a second straight year. In addition, of 86 times recorded by Wittenberg swimmers, 59 of them were lifetime bests- with dozens of times dropping by several seconds.

Juergens continued her outstanding final collegiate season by finishing in the top 10 in each of her individual events. February 13, 2002 -
The Wittenberg men's and women's swimming and diving teams put thefinishing touches on another solid season on Feb. 2 at Case Western Reserve. Heading into the North Coast Athletic Conference championship meet Feb.14-16 at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio, the Tiger men were 6-4 and the women were 4-5-1 against a very challenging 2001-02 dual meet schedule.

While those records were good, the team may well be peaking heading into the toughest conference swim meet

in NCAA Division III, one that includes perennial national title contenders Kenyon, Denison, Wooster and Wabash. The Tiger men appear to be in the mix to finish anywhere from third to fifth in the NCAC, while the women appear to be poised to defend their fourth-place spot. Both teams were fourth in the conference last year with school-record point totals.

On the men's side, the Tigers are led by a trio of athletes who have already produced strong times. Senior Jeremy Lazarus (Moens, France/Ferney-Voltaire)figures to lead the way this year as he attempts to win his second straight 100-yard breaststroke title. He is very close to qualifying for the NCAA meet in the event after making Honorable Mention All-America in 2001.

Another Honorable Mention All-American hoping for a return trip to the national meet is sophomore Steve Rader (Painesville, Ohio/St. Ignatius),who has once again been very consistent in the butterfly events. Also swimming well in a quest for a first NCAA berth is sophomore Alex Berger (Findlay,Ohio/Findlay), who's best time in the 100 breaststroke was just three seconds away from the NCAA "B" cut.

Rounding things out for the men is sophomore Kyle Dunaway (Warren,Ohio/Howland), who is considered an NCAC contender in the 400 Individual Medley as he approaches the school record of 4:15.0. And the sprint freestylers, including sophomores Matt Werbach (Painesville, Ohio/Hawken) andScott Olmsted (Castle Rock, Colo./Cherry Creek) and senior Bob Rafferty (Mt. Vernon, Ohio/Mt. Vernon) have put up some strong times and are threatening several school records posted just a year ago.

Alex Berger

On the women's side, things start with a trio of returning 2001 NCAA meet participants, seniors Rachel Juergens (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central), Paula Hauser (Mason, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) and Melissa Beck (Williamsville, N.Y./Carmel (Ind.)). Juergens has been outstanding again this year after finishing fifth in the nation in the 1650 freestyle last year. One of the most versatile swimmers in school history and holder of no less than nine school records, Juergens has already posted times that figure to qualify her for the national event.

Hauser was an Honorable Mention All-America selection a year ago for her strong finish in the 200 breaststroke, and she is once again approaching the time to qualify for the national meet. Beck, despite spending the first semester abroad, has come on strong in recent weeks and will again be a factor on relays, at the very least.

Other swimmers hope to break through at the NCAC meet are sophomoreNicole Kinzeler (Centerville, Ohio/Kettering Alter), who has performed well in several short freestyle events; sophomore Courtney

Nicole Kinzeler

Galliger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan), who took first place by a full three seconds in the 100 backstroke at Case Western; sophomore Jessica Forsberg (Wickliffe, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), who has made significant improvements this year; and senior Elizabeth Bradley (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), who recently posted her career-best in the 1650 free.

February 6, 2002 -

The Wittenberg men's and women's swimming and diving teams have done everything they can to prepare for the final stretch. The dual meet season wrapped up last weekend with losses for both teams at Case Western Reserve, dropping the Tiger men to 6-4 on the season and the women to 4-5-1. Both were 7-4 a year ago under eventual NCAC Coach of the Year Bob Rueppel

The scores were deceiving, however, as some of the season's best times were posted for the Tigers on both the men's and women's side of the board.

The women were defeated in 12 of 13 events, while the men fared a fraction better with first place swims in 10 of 13 events. The lone winner on the women's side was sophomore Courtney Galliger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan), who took first place by a full three seconds in the 100-yard backstroke.

For the men, sophomore Alex Berger (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) narrowly won the 100 breaststroke by .03. Sophomore Steve Rader (Painesville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) finished first in the 100 butterfly. And the foursome of Rader, sophomore Matt Werbach (Painesville, Ohio/Hawken), sophomore Scott Olmsted (Castle Rock, Colo./Cherry Creek) and senior Bob Rafferty (Mt. Vernon, Ohio/Mt. Vernon) took first in the 200 freestyle relay, posting not only the fastest time of the meet, but also the fastest time the Tigers have seen this season.

Several women posted notable swims. Senior Elizabeth Bradley (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) cruised to a personal best in the 1,000 free with a time of 11:01.06, good for second place.

Senior Melissa Beck (Williamsville, N.Y./Carmell (Ind.)) captured a pair of second place finishes for the Tigers in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 back. Sophomore Nicole Kinzeler (Centerville, Ohio/Kettering Alter) tagged a season-best time and a second place finish in the 100 free. Senior Carolyn Scaia (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) also had a season-best time in the 100 fly. Galliger took second in the 50 free, followed closely by sophomore Jessica Forsberg (Wickliffe, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) in the same event.

Diving for the women, sophomore Jennifer Ingwalson (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Highland) took second in the 1-meter competition, while sophomore Jamie Cook (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) too third on the same board. In the 3-meter competition, sophomore Holly Erikson (St. Paul, Minn./Central) finished third.

Back to the men, sophomore Brandon Morris (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) posted his best time in the 1,000 free and took second place. Morris, was followed by sophomore Jon Bradley (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), who finished fourth in the same event. Senior Jeremy Lazarus (Moens, France/Ferney-Voltaire) took second place in the 200 IM, while Rader had the same finish in the 500-yard freestyle.

In an interesting finish, Morris and sophomore Kyle Dunaway (Warren, Ohio/Howland) tied for fourth place in the 500-yard freestyle. Rafferty chipped in with two individual third-place finishes with season-best swims in both the 100 and 200 free. Sophomore Paul Miller (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) also posted a season-best time in the 100 breaststroke.

Women's swimming team in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Men's swimming team in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The Wittenberg swimming and diving teams travelled to the University of Kentucky last Saturday and turned in another strong performance in a tri-meet with NCAA Division III powerhouses Emory and Transylvania. Both the men's and women's teams were defeated by Emory, which is a top five team nationally, but scored enough points to defeat Transylvania.

What was encouraging, beyond competing well for a second straight week against one of the finest teams in Division III swimming and diving, was a string a quality performances by almost every athlete on the Wittenberg teams. Several swimmers finished their events with season-best times, led by senior All-American Rachel Juergens (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central).

Juergens, who broke several school records last season and finishedfifth in the nation in the 1650-yard freestyle in a record time of 17:13.26,raced well
in the same event on Saturday and recorded an NCAA Division III B StandardCut qualifying time of 17:40.23. That time was faster than her time atthe same point a year ago.

Her performance came on the heels of a school-record time of 4:42.55 inthe 400 Individual Medley set a week earlier. Against Emory and Transylvania, she showed off that same versatility by placing in the 400 IM and the 200backstroke.

Also swimming well over the weekend was senior Elizabeth Bradley(Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), who turned in a season-best time of 18:28.24 in the 1650 free. She also showed her versatility and endurance by turning in fine times in the 400 IM and 500 free.

In addition, the women's 400 medley relay turned in one of its best times of the year with sophomore Courtney Galliger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan)doing the backstroke, senior Paula Hauser (Mason, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) doing the breaststroke, senior Betsy Godin (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) doing the butterfly and sophomore Jessica Forsberg (Wickliffe, Ohio/NotreDame Cathedral Latin) doing the freestyle. Galliger also turned in strong times of 25.50 in the 50 free and 56.51 in the 100 free. Godin had a season-best time of 2:20.88 in the 200 fly and was part of the 400 free relay that nearly posted a season best. Hauser, an Honorable Mention All-American a year ago, was also involved in the 400 free relay and had a season-best time in the 200 breaststroke of 2:31.36. She was joined in the relays by sophomore Nicole Kinzeler(Centerville, Ohio/Kettering Alter) and senior Melissa Beck (Williamsville,N.Y./Carmel (Ind.)).

That wasn't all for the women's team. Kinzeler turned in good times in the 200 and 500 free events, while Hauser showed that she is rounding into form again this year with a season-best time of 2:31.36. Forsberg went a lifetime-best of 58.55 in the 100 free, and freshman Meghan Jewett (Batavia, Ohio/McNicholas) had a season-best in the 200 back in 2:22.90.

On the men's side, the 400 medley relay posted a season-best time of3:43.22. Sophomores Steve Rader (Painesville, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius),Alex Berger (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) and Matt Werbach (Painesville,Ohio/Hawken) and senior Bob Rafferty (Mt. Vernon, Ohio/Mt. Vernon)swam the back, breast, fly and free respectively.

The 400 free relay of Rader, Werbach, Rafferty and sophomore Scott Olmsted (Castle Rock, Colo./Cherry Creek) nearly posted a season-best time as well.

Individually, Berger went 51.28 in the 100 free for one of his best of the season. And sophomore Brandon Morris (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) went a season-best 17:38.52 in the 1650 free.

The Wittenberg swimming and diving teams plunged into the second half of their seasons last weekend, taking on Division I rival Wright State on Friday at home and hitting the road to face perennial national title contender Denison on Saturday. The results were two defeats - by scores of 77-134 (men) and 79-161 (women) against Wright State and 75-127 (men) and 93-132 (women) against Denison - but the very important opportunities to measure up against quality competition.
Against Wright State, Wittenberg got strong performances from sophomore Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/St. Ignatius), who won the 100-meter butterfly, and senior Rachel Juergens (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central), who won the 400 Individual Medley and 500 freestyle events. Against Denison, Rader was the team's lone first-place finisher on the men's side, while Juergens was strong again in winning the 200 free and 500 free. She has now competed and placed in 11 different events this year, and her winning time in the 400 IM against Wright State was good for an NCAA "B" cut, meaning she is provisionally qualified for the national championship meet in March.

Also turning in strong performances over the weekend were sophomore Courtney Galliger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan), who won the 100 backstroke against Wright State, freshman Jennifer Kay (Strongsville, Ohio/Rocky River Magnificat) with a personal best in 1000 free, and senior Elizabeth Bradley (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) with a lifetime best in the same event.

The Wittenberg swimming and diving teams returned from a training trip in Florida last weekend and now prepare for the second half of their schedule. It won't be easy to continue the success the teams enjoyed in the first part of the season, as the competition and the stakes rise considerably.

First off for the Tigers, who carry a men's record of 5-0 and a women's record of 3-1-1, have a home meet with neighboring Division I rival Wright State. Then Wittenberg travels to Granville, Ohio on Saturday to take on perennial Division III powerhouse Denison Big Red, whose women won the national title a year ago.

The Tigers competed for a final time in 2001 over the weekend and once again proved they could hang with some of the best competition in NCAA Division III. Competing at the DePauw Invitational, the Wittenberg women finished third out of nine teams, just behind national powers DePauw and Washington University, while the men were fourth out of 10 teams, behind national powers Washington, Wabash and DePauw.

For the women, senior Rachel Juergens (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) had the best individual finishes.

An All-American a year ago, Juergens is in fine form already this year, claiming a third-place finish in the 400 Individual Medley, a second in the 1650 free and the Tigers' only title of the weekend in the 500 free. Also scoring big points for the women were senior Paula Hauser (Mason, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame), who turned in a pair of third-place finishes, sophomore Nicole Kinzeler (Centerville, Ohio/Kettering Alter), who had three fourth-place finishes, and senior Betsy Godin (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown), who wound up third in the 200 butterfly.

On the men's side, senior Jeremy Lazarus (Moens, France/Ferney-Voltaire) was the top inidividual finisher with a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke and a pair of third-place finishes. Sophomore Steve Rader (Painesville, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius) provided great support with a pair of second-place finishes, in the 100 fly and 200 IM.

A week after making an outstanding debut under new coach Leslie Ramsey, the Tigers were back at it on Saturday, turning in another fine performance in the first dual meet of the 2001-02 season. The men's team, with three returning All-Americans leading the way, scored an impressive 139-84 victory over visiting NCAC rival Wooster, while the women, also with three returning All-Americans on the roster but only two of them currently with the team, were beaten by Wooster 154-86.

The Tiger men got several strong performances in the win and captured 11 of the 13 events in the dual competition. Sophomore Brandon Morris (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) won the 1000-yard freestyle and 500 free, both by comfortable margins. Sophomore Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/St. Ignatius) was also a double-winner with a runaway victory in the 200 butterfly and the 200 free.

On the women's side, the story was scripted similarly to a year ago. The team was unable to stay with the Scots, who finished 10th in the nation a year ago, but senior Rachel Juergens (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) picked up right where she left in 2000-01, winning three events. She captured the 200 free by almost four seconds, the 500 free by nearly nine seconds and the 1000 free by 26 seconds.

October 30, 2001 -

It was a fine debut for the Tigers and new coach Leslie Ramsey. In the season-opening NCAC Relays, an event that involves a variety of relay competitions and the opportunity to get every swimmer into the pool, Wittenberg finished fourth in both the men's and women's competitions. National powerhouses Kenyon, Denison and Wooster showed the way on the women's side (all finished in the top 10 at the 2001 NCAA meet), while Kenyon, Denison and Wabash were 1-2-3 on the men's side (all finished in the top 20 at the 2001 NCAA meet).

Last year, Wittenberg was fifth in the both the men and women's competitions. The Tigers moved up to fourth each in the NCAC Championship meet last February.

Among the best performances were the ones turned in by the women's 200 medley relay of sophomore Nicole Kinzeler (Centerville, Ohio/Kettering Alter), senior Paula Hauser (Mason, Ohio/Mason), senior Betsy Godin (Downington, Pa./Downington) and sophomore Courtney Galliger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan), and the men's 200 breaststroke relay of sophomore Alex Berger (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay), sophomore Steve Rader (Painesville, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius), sophomore Steve Barry (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) and senior Jeremy Lazarus (Moens, France/Ferney-Voltaire).

In addition, Ramsey cited the women's diving duo of sophomore Holly Erickson (St. Paul, Minn./Central) and sophomore Jennifer Ingwalson (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Highland) for their outstanding performance.
