Junior Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius) also earned All-America honors. A three-time national meet qualifier, Rader matched his best performance ever with a pair of fourth-place finishes at the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving National Championships at Emory University March 20-22. Also a two-time All-American in 2002, Rader finished fourth in the 200-yard Individual Medley and fourth in the 200-yard butterfly, the latter in a school record time of 1:51.48. In addition, Rader finished 12th (Honorable Mention All-America) in the 100-yard butterfly in a school-record time of 50.57.
Like track and field, the top eight in each event are designated All-America. As a team, Wittenberg posted a school-record tying 35 points, all scored by Rader, en route to 21st place.
Rounding things out, freshman Rebecca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington) finished 10th in the 400-yard Individual Medley, 11th in the 1650-yard freestyle and 23rd in the 500-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships at Emory University March 15-17. All three finishes were a result of personal-best times by Searcy, with the first two being good for Honorable Mention All-America honors. As a team, Wittenberg finished 40th nationally with 13 points, all scored by Searcy.

The Wittenberg men's and women's swimming and diving teams learned last week that junior Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius) and freshman Rebecca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington) had qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship Meets scheduled for March 13-15 for the women and March 20-22 for the men.
Rader is making his third consecutive appearance in the national meet. Already an All-America honoree several times over, Rader posted an NCAA B cut time in the 200-yard Individual Medley after finishing second in the event at the NCAC meet. Searcy posted three NCAA B cuts after improving her times in the 500 free, 1650 free and 400 IM at the NCAC meet. She finished fifth in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.37, fourth in the 1650 free in 17:39.54 and third in the 400 IM in 4:36.63. The latter time was a school record and earned Searcy her first All-NCAC honor.

Head Coach Leslie Ramsey was rewarded for her efforts with an NCAC Coach of the Year award in the women's division.
While the Tiger men had a lower team finish, they had more All-NCAC finishes. Wittenberg, which actually finished ahead of Wooster and Wabash in the swimming events but lost too many points in the diving competition, placed five athletes on the all-conference rolls (top three in any event). The leader, as expected, was junior Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius), who finished second in the 200-yard Individual Medley. The conference champion in the event a year ago because the eventual national champion from Kenyon chose to swim other events, Rader actually finished with a better time (1:54.11) in 2003 and made an NCAA B cut. Ramsey says his time is almost certain to stand up and qualify Rader for the national meet next month in Atlanta, Ga.
Three men's relays took top-three finishes, accounting for the other four individuals who made all-conference. In the 200 freestyle relay, the quartet of Rader, junior Scott Olmsted (Castle Rock, Colo./Cherry Creek), junior Alex Berger (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) and junior Matt Werbach (Painesville, Ohio/Hawken) finished third in a time of 1:27.10. In the 400 medley relay, Rader, Berger, Werbach and junior Jonathan Newcomer (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) finished third in a time of 3:35.00. And rounding things out, the 200 medley relay foursome of Werbach, Berger, Rader and Olmsted claimed third-place finish in a time of 1:36.40.
Considering that the NCAC is the best and deepest swimming conference in NCAA Division III, top eight finishes are very strong. Rader turned in a fifth place finish in the 100 butterfly in a time of 51.00 and a fourth in the 200 fly with an NCAA B cut time of 1:53.19. Berger made the first NCAA B cut of his career with a time of 59.04 in the 100 breaststroke, which was good for sixth place. Berger also finished eighth in the 200 breast with a time of 2:10.63. And junior diver Colin Donegan (Darien, Conn./Darien) finished eighth in the diving competition.
On the women's side, freshman Rebecca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington) was again a great story, but so were several of her classmates. Searcy, already with three NCAA B cuts to her credit, improved her times in the 500 free, 1650 free and 400 IM and is now a near lock to compete in the national meet next month. She finished fifth in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.37, fourth in the 1650 free in 17:39.54 and third in the 400 IM in 4:36.63. The latter time was a school record and earned Searcy her first All-NCAC honor.
Freshman Betany Yeakley (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) finished eighth in the 200 IM in 2:13.57, sixth in the 100 backstroke in an NCAA B cut time of 1:00.39 and fourth in the 200 back with an NCAA B cut time of 2:10.34. In addition, freshman Amy Conner (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) provided some strong team points with a sixth-place finish in the 200 breast in a time of 2:29.19. That time was just a fraction of a second off the NCAA B cutoff.
Rounding things out for the Tiger women were freshman Leslie Banas (Huntington Woods, Mich./Mercy) with a seventh-place finish in the 1650 free with a personal-best time of 18:13.00 and sophomore Catherine Gray (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands), who was the second women's competitor to claim All-NCAC honors with a third-place finish in the three-meter diving.
Several Tiger swimmers, including Berger, Conner and Yeakley, are considering swimming one final regular season meet this weekend at Case Western Reserve. Those three have times that tentatively qualify for the national meet, and improving on those marks could make the difference.

Freshman Rebecca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington) and junior Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius) have been the headliners all season, and this weekend they must again perform their best if the Tigers are going to meet the lofty expectations that Head Coach Leslie Ramsey has set for them. But while swimming has its individual features, at the college level, the team is just as important and number of other contributors must step forward.
Searcy has made three NCAA B cuts already this year, and she is well positioned to advance to the national meet. For the Tiger women to do well in this meet, Searcy must continue to lower her times in the 400-yard Individual Medley, the 500 freestyle and the 1650 free, and she will have to come up big in several relay events as well.
Searcy is one of three freshmen swimmers who are standing out on a talented women's team. Betany Yeakley (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) hopes to challenge for all-conference honors and national meet berths in the 100 and 200 backstroke events and the 200 IM as well. Amy Conner (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) is a challenger in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and also hopes to score points in the 200 IM. Both will be key members of relay teams as well.
It's not all about the freshmen for the Tiger women, however. Three juniors are also doing well and will hopefully score big points in the sprint freestyle events and relays this weekend. Nicole Kinzeler (Centerville, Ohio/Kettering Alter), Courtney Galliger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and Jessica Forsberg (Wickliffe, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) could score enough points to keep the Tigers in the hunt. In addition, sophomore Catherine Gray (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) could be a factor in the diving competition.
On the men's side, Rader is a returning All-American, and he is on stride for a repeat performance in 2003. Without an NCAA B cut heading into the conference meet for a second straight year, Rader is a high seed in several events and hopes to defend his NCAC title in the 200 IM. Junior Alex Berger (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) has made great improvements in 2002-03 and will be a factor in the breaststroke events. Juniors Matt Werbach (Painesville, Ohio/Hawken), Scott Olmsted (Castle Rock, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Kyle Dunaway (Warren, Ohio/Howland) have also been performing well this year and will be counted on to provide points to the team effort and strong times to the relays.

In what seems to be a weekly event, freshman Rebecca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington) reached another NCAA B cut against Case Western, this time in the 500-yard freestyle. She now has three NCAA provisional qualifying times, and is moving closer and closer to assuring herself of a berth in the national meet in March in Atlanta.
Pool record in the 200 backstroke by Betany Yeakley (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) in 2:11.90. She is less than one second away from the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 2:11.19. Season best time for Anne Overly (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Northern) in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:35.31 and she recorded win in the event in her collegiate career.
On the men's side, junior All-American Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius) just missed the pool record in the 200 butterfly in finishing first in the meet. Junior Kyle Dunaway (Warren, Ohio/Howland) claimed first place in the 200 back in his season-best time of 2:05.06.
Next up for the Tigers is the NCAC Championship meet at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio. That meet features some of the finest competition in all of NCAA Division III, including perennial national champion Kenyon and national powers Denison, Wooster and Wabash. The Tigers have finished fourth in both men's and women's each of the last two years.

Once again, the highlight of the weekend was provided by freshman Rebecca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington). A week after setting a pool record in the 400 Individual Medley, Searcy came back with NCAA B cut times in the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle. She now has three B cut times this season in what is increasingly looking like a solid bid to represent Wittenberg at the NCAA Division III meet in March.
Two other freshmen women swimmers have continued to show tremendous improvement throughout the season and are knocking on the door of the NCAA B cut lists as well. Amy Conner (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) and Betany Yeakley (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) are both within seconds of several pool and school records in their respective events. Conner specializes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and Yeakley is best in the 100 and 200 backstroke.
On the men's side, junior All-American Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius) continues to round into the outstanding form he showed last year when he single-handedly put Wittenberg among the top 25 teams in the nation at the NCAA meet. He is just a fraction off the NCAA qualifying times in the Individual Medley and butterfly events heading into the season's stretch run. Hoping to join him in the pool at the national meet is junior Alex Berger (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay), who is have an outstanding season in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events.
The final dual meet of the 2002-03 season takes place this weekend as one of the top teams in the Midwest, Case Western Reserve University, comes calling on Saturday at the HPER Center. The Tigers will be honoring their seniors, Josh Schnacke (Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green), Becky Barry (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River), Sara Broun (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame), Jana Steiger (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) and Ashley Tipple (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview).

The women lost 158-84 to fall to 4-3 on the season in dual meets. The highlight of the meet for the hosts was a pool record time of 4:37 in the 400-yard Individual Medley turned in by freshman Rebecca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington). She was the only Tiger swimmer for either the men or women to win her event.
Also finishing strong for the women were junior Nicole Kinzeler (Centerville, Ohio/Kettering Alter), who finished second in the 200 freestyle and junior Nicole Galliger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan), who claimed runner-up honors in the 50 free.
On the men's side, junior All-American Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius) took a pair of second place finishes, in the 500 free and 100 butterfly. Both times were among the best by a Tiger swimmer this year. Junior Matt Werbach (Painesville, Ohio/Hawken) finished third in the 100 free in a strong time of 51.55. Junior captain Kyle Dunaway (Warren, Ohio/Howland) added a second in the 400 IM with a sparkling time of 4:26. And freshman Kevin McAninch (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Lancaster) chipped in with his season-best time of 11:05 in the 1,000 free.
The dual meet road gets no easier this week as the Tigers travel to NCAA Division I Wright State on Friday and then returns home for a meet against Transylvania on Saturday. Head Coach Leslie Ramsey remains optimistic that the brutal schedule she put together will reap dividends as the Tigers compete in the strongest conference meet in the nation in February.

Turning in the strongest finish for either the men's or women's team was freshman Becca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington), who finished second in the 400 Individual Medley. Her time actually broke the meet record prior to her race.
Also swimming particularly well for the women were Sarah Schick (Bloomington, Ind./North) in the 100 butterfly, junior Nicole Kinzeler (Centerville, Ohio/Alter) in the 100 freestyle, freshman Leslie Banas (Huntington Woods, Mich./Mercy) in the 1650 free and freshman Amy Conner (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville).
Leading the charge on the men's side, as always, was junior Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/St. Ignatius), who turned in high finishes in a pair of butterfly events. Freshman Dan McGuire (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) had some of his best times in the 50 and 100 free events, sophomore Jonathan Newcomer (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) was strong in the 100 and 200 backstroke and also had one of his best splits in the 400 free relay, junior Brandon Morris (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) chipped in with solid times in the distance events, and junior captain Kyle Dunaway (Warren, Ohio/Howland) swam well in his events, including the 400 IM.
The swimmers will finish exams, enjoy the holidays and then hit the pools in Florida as part of their annual training trip before returning to competition in Ohio. The next meet is opposite national power Denison on Jan. 18.

The best finish for either team was turned in by freshman freshman Becca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington), who set a new pool record in the 400-yard Individual Medley in an NCAA "B" cut time. Fellow freshman Betany Yeakley (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) just missed making a little history of her own, finishing first in the 200 backstroke in a time that was less than one second short of the school record. Other notables among the Tiger winners were junior Jessica Forsberg (Wickliffe, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) in the 50 freestyle, junior Jamie Cook (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) in the 1-meter diving competition and senior Ashley Tipple (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview) in the 3-meter diving.
The men got particularly season or lifetime best performances from freshman Sean Buffington (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian) in the 200 free, junior Kyle Dunaway (Warren, Ohio/Howland), who took second in the 200 butterfly, and freshman Sean Buchan (Akron, Ohio/Revere) in the 400 IM. The difference in the meet was diving, just as it was earlier in a dual meet against Wabash. Wittenberg does not currently have any male divers competing.

Against Oberlin, the men got particularly strong performances from junior Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/St. Ignatius) in the 200-yard freestyle and 200 butterfly. He won both events. Also putting together outstanding times in the meet were sophomore Blake Troxel (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell), who had a first in the 200 breaststroke and a second in the 200 Individual Medley, junior Steven Barry (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River), who finished second in the 200 breast and junior Kyle Dunaway (Warren, Ohio/Howland), who took second in the 500 free with a time of 5:21.73.
On the women's side against Oberlin, top times were turned in by freshman Leslie Banas (Huntington Woods, Mich./Mercy) in the 1,000 free (she won the event by 40 seconds), freshman Betany Yeakley (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) in the 200 free, freshman Becca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington) in the 200 IM, junior Nicole Kinzeler (Centerville, Ohio/Alter) in the 200 backstroke and the 50 free, junior Courtney Galliger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) in the 50 free and junior Jessica Forsberg (Wickliffe, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) in the 50 free. Galliger, Kinzeler and Forsberg swept the 50 free.
Against Wabash, individual winners included Rader, Troxel, junior Matt Werbach (Painesville, Ohio/Hawken) and junior Alex Berger (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay). The meet was tight down to the end, with the Little Giants' diving performance playing a key role since Wittenberg does not have any competitors in men's diving currently.

Rader captured first place finishes in the 200 butterfly and 100 butterfly and junior Kyle Dunaway (Warren, Ohio/Howland) pulled off a win to lead a Tigers sweep in the 400 IM. Kinzeler took the top spot in the 100 free, Galliger claimed first in the 100 back, Searcy won the 200 breast and 200 free and Yeakley took the prize in the 200 back.

The Wittenberg Swimming & Diving teams officially opened the 2002-03 season with a strong showing at the annual NCAC Relays, hosted by Kenyon on Saturday. The diving portion was hosted by Denison, also on Saturday.
The Tigers are in a rebuilding mode after several All-Americans graduated in the last two years. Still, Wittenberg competed well against some of the finest teams in NCAA Division III, finishing fifth in both the men's and women's meets, fourth when factoring only the swimming portions of each team competition.
For the women, veterans Courtney Galliger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and Nicole Kinzeler (Centerville, Ohio/Alter) lead the team with exceptional performances. Newcomers Rebecca Searcy (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby County Bloomington), Betany Yeakley (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington), Amy Conner (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) and Sarah Schick (Bloomington, Ind./North) debuted their talent for the Tigers as they swam to strong finishes in each relay event.
The junior class led the way for the men as Matt Werbach (Painesville, Ohio/Hawken), Scott Olmsted (Castle Rock, Colo./Cherry Creek), Steve Rader (Concord, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius), Alex Berger (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay), Kyle Dunaway (Warren, Ohio/Howland) and Steven Barry (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) produced strong points for the team's total. Also producing a strong finish was sophomore Blake Troxel (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell), a transfer student who the Tigers have high hopes for in 2002-03.
The swimming and diving teams will kick off their dual meet season on Saturday with a match-up against the College of Wooster. It is the start of a busy dual meet schedule in which Wittenberg will square with a number of the top teams in the nation, including Kenyon, Denison and Emory.
