Tigers Open Season at Cedarville Invite

Mat Guida
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Wittenberg Head Coach Craig Penney and his Tiger track and field squads opened the 2009 indoor season with a strong showing at the Cedarville Invitational. Even though the Tigers only brought part of their team, including only a limited number of sprinters and field events, a number of Tigers made their early mark on the 2009 season.

Right out of the gate, sophomore Kaitlyn Wesseler (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) set a school record for the indoor pole vault, breaking her own record from last year and moving the new barrier to 10-feet even. Wesseler's vault highlighted a night for some of the Tiger youth. Fellow underclassmen Kari Domiano (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) and Catherine Kuerbitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Regina) shined in the sprinting events, with Domiano running a 7.81 in the 55-meter dash and Kuerbitz taking the 400 meters with a 64.00.

The men saw their bright spots come from the field events, where two-sport standout Mat Guida (LaGrange, Ky./Oldham County) tossed the weight 44-feet, 5 1/4 inches to lead a parade of strong Wittenberg throwing performances. Sophomore Nic Radel (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) put a good early season mark in the shot, going 42-feet 4-inches to claim points for the Tiger men.

In the sprints, senior Manny Lamarre (Miami, Fla./Bellen Jesuit) established a couple of solid early season performances, highlighted by his 6.76 run in the 55-meter dash. The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Denison University's annual Lid Lifter.
