Wittenberg Track And Field Teams Open Indoor Season At Capital

Erik Larkin
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers opened the 2008 season at the Capital Purple and White Indoor Meet. A relatively small Wittenberg contingent performed well, led by several outstanding individual performances.

The Tiger men placed seventh in the team standings with 58 points. A majority of those were scored by junior Erik Larkin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Country Day), who placed first in the triple jump, third in the long jump and second in the high jump. The next-best finish for the Tiger men was turned in by junior Gabe Savage (Lewisburg, Ohio/Tri-County North), who placed second in the 1000 meters.

The Tiger women placed fifth in the eight-team field with 44 points. Junior Katie Shoemaker (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin-Monroe) took second place in the 300 meters and third in the 500 meters, freshman Kaitlyn Wesseler (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) placed second in the pole vault and senior Allison Walker (Columbus, Ohio/Academy) turned in a first in the weight throw and third in the shot put. Wesseler's performance was particularly noteworthy as she broke a school record with a mark of 9-6.

Wittenberg's teams return to action Jan. 25 at Capital.
