The highlights of the meet were many as eight Wittenberg athletes claimed individual championships. Eight different men earned All-NCAC finishes, not including relays, and five different women were named All-NCAC, again not including relays.
Junior Tim Gaal (Amanda, Ohio/Clearcreek) was the biggest individual story for Wittenberg as he earned NCAC Field Events Athlete of the Year for finishing first in the decathlon and javelin, third in the long jump, sixth in the high jump and eighth in the pole vault. He is an NCAA provisional qualifier in the decathlon and javelin, an event in which he placed 11th in the nation a year ago.
Junior Skip Ivery (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport-Madison) extended his dominance in the high hurdles events, winning his third straight NCAC outdoor 110-meter hurdles championship. He also has two NCAC indoor 55-meter hurdles championships and finished second in the nation in that event in March. He is an NCAA provisional qualifier.
Other individual champions on the men's side were senior Curtis Lundgren (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) in the 800 meters, junior Joel Drake (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) in the discus and sophomore Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian) in the long jump. Making All-NCAC, which is based on a top-three finish, were Drake with a second place in the shot put, freshman Jered Glover (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown), who claimed third in the 200 meters and third in the triple jump, sophomore Clyde Mayer (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), who placed third in the discus, and sophomore Jason Toman (Greenville, Ohio/Greenville) with a second place in the 400-meter hurdles.
In addition, the 400-meter relay quartet of freshman David Bazzel (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe), junior Demetrius Ellison (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity), senior Mark Trempe (Springfield, Ohio/St. Paris Graham) and Ivery finished second and the 1600-meter relay foursome of Lundgren, Trempe, Ellison and sophomore Chad Kresser (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) finished third.
On the women's side, junior Kristen Mumper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian) finished first in the triple jump and third in the long jump to claim a pair of All-NCAC awards, junior Geri Woessner (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) claimed second in the heptathlon and third in the javelin, senior Amanda Young (London, Ohio/London) finished first in the high jump, senior Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) turned in a school-record time of 11:40.19 in finishing second in the 3000-meter steeplechase, junior Kelly Zilli (Dayton, Ohio/Alter) finished first in the 800 meters and sophomore Ayisha Kinamore (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) was second in the 400-meter hurdles.
In addition, the 400-meter relay quartet of sophomore Tina Valerius (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame), sophomore Marissa Davoll (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson), Mumper and Kinamore took third place to gain All-NCAC honors. The 1600-meter relay foursome of freshman Anna Finkelstein (Whitehall, Mich./Reeths-Puffer), Davoll, Valerius and Zilli finished second.

Junior Tim Gaal (Amanda, Ohio/Clearcreek) became the third different Wittenberg athlete to win the decathlon in the last five years and extended the Tigers' domination in the event to five straight years. Josh Guerreri was a three-time champion in the event from 1999-2001 and Brian Gehle won the event a year ago while Gaal captured second place.
Gaal's mark of 6,101 points met the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard. It was the third straight year that the Wittenberg decathlon champion met that mark. Guerreri went on to compete in the national championship event in 2001.
On the women's side, junior Geri Woessner (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) had a bittersweet finish to her weekend. The two-time defending champion in the heptathlon, Woessner was dethroned by a narrow margin by Hiram senior Emma Brown, who posted 4,184 points to meet the NCAA Division III provisional standard. While Woessner was disappointed to have missed out on a third consecutive heptathlon crown, her outstanding finish was still a significant achievement since she suffered a severe knee injury during the 2002 women's soccer season and is just now rounding back into form after missing all but four games during the basketball season.
Sophomore Ayisha Kinamore (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) also competed in the heptathlon and scored points for the Tigers as a team. She finished fourth in her first year competing in the grueling two-day competition.
Junior Skip Ivery (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport-Madison) was again the man to beat in the hurdles events Wednesday night at a meet hosted by Otterbein. Ivery won both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, the latter in a personal best time. Junior Alex Yurovitsky (Richmond Heights, Ohio/Lyndhurst Brush) posted a personal best in the javelin as he won that event in a Saturday meet hosted by Otterbein, the same meet in which freshman Jered Glover (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) captured first place in both the triple jump and the 100 meters. In addition, freshman Braden Freeman (Prospect, Ohio/Marion Pleasant) finished second in the long jump on Saturday at Otterbein with a mark that was just one-quarter inch off his personal best.
On the women's side, junior Kristen Mumper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian) posted personal best marks in the 200 meters and the long jump at the Saturday Otterbein meet, and she captured first place in the triple jump. In addition, senior Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) placed won the steeplechase at the Otterbein Wednesday night meet with a time of 11:47.47.
Ivery, Gerstle and Gaal were all named NCAC Athlete of the Week for their performances.
The Tigers head into this weekend's conference championship meet at Ohio Wesleyan with high hopes. The men are the defending team champions and are the highest ranked NCAC team in the latest regional and national power rankings. The women are also the highest ranked NCAC team in the latest regional and national power rankings, and they will be attempting to improve upon last year's fifth-place finish. With greater depth on this year's squad, improvement can definitely be expected.

The indoor season concluded March 15 with a bang. Junior Skip Ivery (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport-Madison) finished second in the 55-meter high hurdles at the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship meet at DePauw. Ivery broke his own school record with a blistering time of 7.51 in the finals of the national meet. He was one of three competitors within .01 seconds of one another in a fantastic photo finish.
Also an all-conference wide receiver on the Wittenberg football team, Ivery matched the best finish for an individual athlete in NCAA competition in school history in his first appearance at a national track and field championship event. The top eight competitors in each event are designated as All-America. As a team, Wittenberg wound up tied for 23rd in the nation thanks to Ivery's eight points.
Ivery then picked up where he left off last weekend at the Muskingum Invitational, where he posted a first-place finish in the 110-meter high hurdles. Ivery has lost just one high hurdles race in which Division III runners were exclusively the competition.
Sophomore Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian) and junior Tim Gaal (Amanda, Ohio/Clearcreek) picked up blue ribbons during the meet as well. Rumschlag took a first in the long jump and also finished in the top eight in the 100 meters, 200 meters and triple jump events as well. Gaal, the team's lone national outdoor qualifier in 2002, threw the javelin in competition for the first time in 2003 and took top honors with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 192-8.
Other top finishes were turned in by senior Nate Henderson (Kettering, Ohio/Dayton Carroll), third in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a personal-best time, sophomore Jason Toman (Greenville, Ohio/Greenville) captured second place in the 400 hurdles with a personal-best time, and sophomore Clyde Mayer (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) finished third in the discus with a personal-best throw, followed closely by teammate Joel Drake (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee), a junior who finished fourth.
Toman was named NCAC Sprinter/Hurdler Athlete of the Week, while Mayer earned NCAC Field Events Athlete of the Week for their outstanding performances.
On the women's side, the effort was again led by junior Kristen Mumper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian), who captured first place in the 400 meters, long jump and triple jump and ran a leg of the fifth-place 4x100-meter relay. For her efforts, she earned NCAC Sprinter/Hurdler Athlete of the Week as well.
Other top finishers included junior Kelly Zilli (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Alter), who finished second in the 800 meters and ran a leg of the 4x400-meter relay that finished third, junior Becky Barnes (Williamsport, Ohio/Westfall), who had personal-bests in the 1500 and 5000 meter races, senior Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont), who claimed runner-up honors in the 3000-meter steeplechase, and junior Geri Woessner (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood), who had top-eight finishes in the shot put and javelin in her first meet since suffering a knee injury during soccer season last fall.
No team scores were tabulated at the Muskingum Invitational.

On the men's side, the Tigers finished 11 points behind champion Allegheny in what became an outstanding two-team battle to the end. The Gators finished with 144 points to 133 for Wittenberg, while no other team compiled more than 100 points.
Individually, the Tigers were led by junior Demetrius Ellison (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights Trinity), who earned NCAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year. Ellison recorded a personal best time of 50.22 in winning the 400 meters, a personal best time of 6.65 in finishing second in the 55 meters and a personal best and school record time of 23.07 in taking the blue ribbon in the 200 meters. In addition, Ellison ran the anchor leg of the 4x200 meter relay that claimed first place in a school record time of 1:32.16.
Ellison was hardly alone, however. Sophomore Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian) claimed first place with a personal best of 22-1.25 in the long jump, fourth place in the triple jump, sixth place in the 55 meters and fifth place in the 200 meters. Rumschlag, senior Mark Trempe (Springfield, Ohio/St. Paris Graham) and freshman Matt Locke (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) also ran legs of the aforementioned 4x200 relay.
Senior Joel Drake (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) claimed first place in the shot put with a dramatic final throw that travelled four feet further than his previous efforts. Sophomore Clyde Mayer (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) added a third-place finish and freshman Adam Stone (Bucyrus, Ohio/Bucyrus) finished fourth as the Tigers scored big points in the event.
Rounding things out, junior Skip Ivery (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport-Madison) remained undefeated in the 55 hurdles this season against NCAA Division III opponents as he won the NCAC indoor title in the event for the third straight year. Ivery also scored for the team with a fifth in the 55 meters and a sixth in the 200 meters.
On the women's side, Wittenberg finished with 73.5 points, well behind the top three teams that all scored more than 100. Still, the Tigers got a number of outstanding individual performances, starting with junior Kristen Mumper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian). She finished second in the triple jump, second in the long jump, second in the 400 meters with a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 58.94 and sixth in the 200 meters in a school record time of 26.94.
In addition, junior Kelly Zilli (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Alter) bettered her own school record in the pole vault as she finished fifth with a mark of 9-2. She also finished third in the 800 meters and eight in the 1500 meters.
In addition, senior Amanda Young (London, Ohio/London) placed third with a season-best mark of 5-1 in the high jump. Senior Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) finished fourth in the 1500 with a personal best time, and the 4x400 meter relay quartet of freshman Anna Finkelstein (Whitehall, Mich./Reeths-Puffer), Mumper, sophomore Tina Valerius (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) and sophomore Marissa Davoll (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) claimed a conference title with a time of 4:08.23.
The final stop on the 2003 indoor track schedule is the national meet this weekend at DePauw in Greencastle, Ind. Ivery (55-meter hurdles) and Mumper (triple jump, 400 meters) were both provisionally qualified, but only Ivery wound up earning entry into the event.

The Tigers figure to be very much in the mix again in 2003, especially considering that the men finished second in the NCAC Relays on Feb. 1 and the women claimed third in that meet. While that meet with its relay event format isn't a predictor of eventual championship meet finishes, it can give a pretty good indication of which teams will be the most competitive.
Junior Skip Ivery (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport-Madison) has not lost to an NCAA Division III competitor in the high hurdles events so far this year, and he has never been defeated in the high hurdles at the NCAC Indoor Championships. Ivery recently broke his own school record in the 55-meter hurdles with a blistering time of 7.60, good for an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. It is the top time in the event in the NCAC this year.
Ivery won't be the only big point-scorer for the Tiger men, however. Junior sprinter Demetrius Ellison (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights Trinity) has the top times in the conference in the 200 and 400-meter races. Coming off an injury-plagued 2002 campaign, Ellison is a key to the Tigers' hopes in individual sprint events and the relays.
Speaking of relays, the Tigers' 4x200 relay has turned in the best time of 2003 after nearly capturing the meet record at the NCAC Relays. In addition, Wittenberg will need strong performances from sophomore Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian) in the long jump, triple jump and relays and junior Joel Drake (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee), the NCAC Indoor Track Field Events Athlete of the Week after winning the shot put at the DePauw Tiger Invitational.
Blue ribbons earned by Drake and Ivery were the individual highlights for the Tigers as they finished third out of 12 teams at DePauw. The Wittenberg women also took third place.
On the women's side, several individuals will have to be at their best for Wittenberg to keep pace with defending NCAC Indoor champion Allegheny, which has already claimed the conference cross country championship and the indoor relays title this year. Among them is junior Kelly Zilli (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Alter), who set a school record in the pole vault last week at DePauw. Zilli is potentially a big point-scorer in that event, the 800 meter race and in relays.
The team leader this season has been junior Kristen Mumper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian), who has broken her own school record in the triple jump twice this year and has posted an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark of 36 feet, seven inches. That jump is the best in the NCAC thus far in 2003. Mumper also scores in the long jump and sprinting events. In addition, two-time NCAC cross country champion Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) figures to be a factor in the distance races and senior Erin Zayicek (Solon, Ohio/Solon) has the best mark in the NCAC this year in the weight throw.

Two individuals stood out above the rest, much as they have all season. Junior Skip Ivery (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport-Madison) was beaten in the high hurdles for the first time this season, but it took a field of Division I scholarship athletes and unattached club team competitors to do it. Ivery broke his own school record in the 55-meter hurdles with a blistering time of 7.60, good for an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. He currently stands second in the nation in that event.
Junior Kristen Mumper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian) broke her own school record in the triple jump for the second straight week, going an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying 36 feet, seven inches. She finished fourth in the event with that personal-best mark. Mumper also claimed fourth place with a personal-best mark of 17-0 in the long jump, fourth in the 400 meters with a personal best 1:00.16 and ninth in the 200 with a school record and personal-best time of 27.34.
There were plenty of other notable performances and personal bests turned in during the meet as well. Among the men, junior Demetrius Ellison (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights Trinity) set a school record with a 23.03 in the 200, followed closely by sophomore Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian) with a 23.04, which was also under the old mark. Ellison also placed fifth in a tough 400 field with a 51.52, Rumschlag wound up seventh in the long jump and third in the triple jump (both with personal best marks), freshman Jered Glover (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) took seventh in the triple jump with a personal best mark and senior Adrian Crane (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) added an eighth place finish in the triple jump, also with a personal best.
On the women's side, personal-bests were turned in by sophomore Tina Valerius (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) and sophomore Marissa Davoll (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) in the 55 hurdles, Valerius, Davoll and freshman Anna Finkelstein (Whitehall, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) in the 200 and freshman Beth Hurst (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Sycamore) in the shot put.
Rounding things out was senior Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont), who finished second in the 3,000 with a personal best time of 11:05.98 and third in the mile in 5:24.83. For her outstanding efforts, Gerstle was named NCAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Distance Events Athlete of the Week. Wittenberg has had an indoor track and field athlete of the week every week since the season started Jan. 18.

Junior Kristen Mumper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian) continued her assault on the Wittenberg record books, breaking her own mark in the triple jump and joining freshman Anna Finkelstein (Whitehall, Mich./Reeths-Puffer), sophomore Marissa Davoll (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) and junior Kelly Zilli (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Alter) in establishing a new standard in the 4x400-meter relay.
Along with those outstanding efforts, junior Nikki Norcia (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) turned in a personal-best time in the 600 meter race and freshman Tracy Butler (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) finished with a personal-best time in the mile for the women.
On the men's side, the spotlight shone brightest upon junior Skip Ivery (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport-Madison), who remained unbeaten in the high hurdles this season despite competing against several NCAA Division I and II teams on Saturday. Ivery won the 60-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 8.28 seconds. He was named NCAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Sprints/Hurdles Athlete of the Week for his performance.
Also of note, junior Joel Drake (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) and Thomas Dillingham (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) had personal bests in the shot put.

For the second straight week, Wittenberg had an NCAC Athlete of the Week on the track. This time it was the four members of the 4 x 200-meter relay team, which captured first place in a time of 1:32.81, just over one second short of the three-year-old meet record. The relay consisted of freshman Jered Glover (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown), senior Mark Trempe (Springfield, Ohio/St. Paris Graham), junior Demetrius Ellison (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) and sophomore Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian). The same four combined to win the Sprint Medley relay with a school record time of 3:44.12, bettering the eight-year-old record of 3:44.47.
In the field events, junior Joel Drake (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee), freshman Adam Stone (Bucyrus, Ohio/Bucyrus) and freshman Thomas Dillingham (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) all had personal best throws in the shot put as the three combined to finish second in the relay formatted competition. Juniors Bill Dunlap (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Tim Gaal (Amanda, Ohio/Clearcreek) each cleared 5-10 to tie for second in the high jump relay. For Gaal, a national outdoor track and field qualifier in the javelin a year ago, the mark was a personal best.
To round things out, freshman Matt Locke (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) had a personal best in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.09 and joined with sophomore Jason Toman (Greenville, Ohio/Greenville) and senior Nate Henderson (Kettering, Ohio/Dayton Carroll) to place second. And the 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of Locke, sophomore Chad Kresser (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay), Trempe and Ellison also placed second.
On the women's side, the highlight was a school record time of 4:24.21 in the sprint medley relay, which improved upon a mark established last year at the same meet. Leading the charge was sophomore Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian), who earned NCAC Sprinter of the Week honors for his performance at Wabash. He finished second in the 55-meter and the 200-meter events while running against several scholarship programs.
While Rumschlag has been competing effectively in a variety of events already this year, junior Skip Ivery (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport-Madison) was victorious for a second straight week in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95. He was the NCAC indoor and outdoor hurdles champion. Rounding out the top men's performances was junior Joel Drake (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee), who turned in a personal best throw in the shot put en route to a second-place finish.
On the women's side, the highlight was a school record in the 20-pound weight throw by senior Erin Zayicek (Solon, Ohio/Solon). She finished fifth in the event at Wabash, but she improved upon her own school record by more than three feet.
Also performing well was junior Kristen Mumper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian), who had two second-place finishes. And the distance medley relay foursome of senior Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont), junior Kelly Zilli (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Alter) and freshmen Rebecca Stewart (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School) and Anna Finkelstein (Whitehall, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) turned in a first-place finish.
