SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg University football team, which returns 17 starters from last year's 8-2 team, once again has experts believing they have the talent to make a run at a national championship. Preseason NCAA Division III rankings published in the recently released Street and Smith's College Football Preview 2004 puts the Tigers in the top 10:

Wittenberg, which was the highest ranked team in the North Coast Athletic Conference in the poll and is seeking a sixth NCAC title in the last eight years, opens the 2004 season on Saturday, Sept. 4, against Ohio Athletic Conference powerhouse Capital. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Capital's Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus.
