This is the first such honor in Murray’s fine Wittenberg career. In his second year as the Tigers’ starting tailback, Murray has been a workhorse, following up his 2004 North Coast Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year performance with another outstanding season. After finishing third in the NCAC with 1,320 yards (132.0 per game) and second in the conference with 126 points (12.6 per game), Murray leads the conference in rushing yards (126.6 per game), all-purpose yards (165.1 per game) and points (10.0 per game) in 2005.
Murray also carries a grade point average of 3.6. He is majoring in management.
“Tristan has met every expectation of a player in our program,” said Wittenberg Football Head Coach Joe Fincham. “He’s a fine football player, an outstanding student, a great teammate and a real leader. He’s very deserving of this honor.”
In just two seasons, encompassing 19 games (18 starts), Murray, of New Carlisle, Ohio, has posted some tremendous numbers, in the process moving into the top 10 in school history with 2,453 career rushing yards and 216 total points. Murray, who transferred to Wittenberg from Brown University in December 2003, stands eighth in school history in career rushing yards and seventh in career scoring. His 249 yards rushing against Allegheny in the 2004 season finale is the seventh-best total in school history, and his 239 yards against Dayton earlier this year ranks 10th. Murray’s rushing total against Dayton, which included a 96-yard run on the game’s first play from scrimmage, is the most allowed by the Division I-AA Flyers in nearly 30 years.
Murray will now be considered for Academic All-America honors in voting that takes place later this month.
