SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg University community was dealt a blow on Wednesday, Sept. 12 as former tennis player, coach and Health, Fitness and Sport Adjunct Professor David L. Beach passed away at the age of 60.

A 1962 Wittenberg graduate, Beach is one of the greats in the school’s illustrious athletic history. He played No. 1 singles and doubles four straight years and served as player-coach his senior year after another legendary Wittenberg coach Ray Mears moved to Tennessee. He later coached the Wittenberg men’s tennis team for 19 years, compiling a 153-50 dual match record and winning four Ohio Athletic Conference titles. Paired with his brother Roger, Beach was undefeated in doubles his last two years and won an OAC doubles championship and an NCAA Mideast Regional doubles championship. He was inducted into the Wittenberg University Athletics Hall of Honor in 1985.

A native of Dayton and a 1958 graduate of Belmont High School, Beach was a state finalist as a senior. After his standout career at Wittenberg, he was a two-time Dayton city singles champion, six-time winner of the Montgomery County 35-and-over singles title (1976-81), a teaching professional in the city of Springfield for nearly 30 years and a teacher in the Springfield City School District for more than 30 years.

A viewing will be at the Jackson, Lytle and Ingling Williams Funeral Home on N. Limestone St. from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14. The funeral will be at First Christian Church at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15.
