SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - A successful fall sports season was rounded off for four Wittenberg University student-athletes who earned 2002 Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division honors.

Volleyball team members Brittany Baume (Springfield, Ohio/Southeastern) and Tiffany Keller (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) were commended for their academic achievements with second-team Academic All-District honors. Baume, a senior outside hitter, is a biology major who has posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.86. The 1999 North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Baume participated in 40 games as a senior. Keller, a senior middle hitter, is a double major in psychology and education with a 3.69 GPA. The team leader in blocks three straight seasons, Keller was the 2001 NCAC Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference and All-Great Lakes Region selection each of the last two years.

Both student-athletes were members of the 2002 team that made the NCAA Division III quarterfinals after winning Wittenberg’s first-ever Great Lakes Regional title. The team finished with an overall record of 34-8, including an 8-0 NCAC regular season record. Wittenberg won the NCAC regular season and tournament titles for a sixth straight year and advanced to the national tournament for a seventh straight season.

Skip Ivery
Chad Thompson
Two members of the Wittenberg football team were also recognized with 2002 Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division honors. Junior wide receiver Skip Ivery (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport-Madison), a business management major, gained first-team accolades after he finished the season with 50 receptions, 10 touchdowns, 883 yards and an NCAC-best average of 17.7 yards per catch. Ivery, who has accumulated a 3.87 GPA, is no stranger to academic awards after he earned second-team Academic All-District last spring in track and field. He was a first-team All-NCAC and third-team All-North Region honoree this year, his second as a starter.

The other player recognized for his academic and athletic prowess is Chad Thompson (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands), as a psychology major who carries a 3.74 GPA. Thompson, a second-team Academic all-district choice, is a junior offensive guard who was also a first-team All-NCAC, second-team All-North Region and second-team Hewlett Packard All-America honoree this season.

The two football players were part of a team that finished 10-2 overall and 6-1 in the NCAC in 2002. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Division III Playoffs and recorded 10 wins in a season for a fifth consecutive year.

The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Verizon Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s track & field/cross country, women’s track & field/cross country, men’s at-large and women’s at-large.
