For the fourth time already in the 2000-2001 collegiate sports season, more than one Wittenberg athlete has been selected as North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the same time period. In the Oct. 15 release, senior tailback Casey Donaldson (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) was named the football Offensive Player of the Week for his exploits in Wittenberg’s victory over rival Wooster on Saturday. In addition, sophomore outside hitter Teresa Murphy (Blacklick, Ohio/Newark Catholic) was also selected as Player of the Week for her accomplishments in the five wins the team enjoyed last week.
Donaldson, already the Wittenberg and NCAC record-holder in almost every rushing and scoring category, had another great game when it mattered most for his team. With the game tied at 26 late in the third quarter, Donaldson scored on a brilliant 16-yard burst in which he broke several tackles. He then added a 61-yard run to the end zone with 8:34 left in the game to seal the deal for the fifth-ranked Tigers.
Donaldson finished the game, against one of the top-ranked defensive teams in the country, with 262 yards and four touchdowns. He now has 953 yards in the 2000 season and 4,669 in his career. And he has 62 career touchdowns.
An outside hitter by trade, Murphy ranks second on the team with 316 kills and first in digs with 306. Last week, in wins over Ohio Wesleyan, California State Hayward, Colorado College, Westminster and Webster, Murphy hammered 60 kills and recorded 53 digs. She was one of three players named to Colorado College’s Spike It Up! Invitational All-Tournament Team.
