Posted September 14 2000, 11:45 am Posted by: Ryan Maurer MEN'S and WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Coach Steve Shutt (second season) Once again battling warm, muggy conditions, the Tigers performed well in their first race against North Coast Athletic Conference competition Saturday at the Wittenberg Invitational. Sophomore Nick DeWald (Mansfield, Ohio/Senior) paced the men's squad again with a third-place finish in a time of 2838. Junior Dave Hyde (Naperville, Ind./Naperville) also made a good showing, crossing the finish line in 2946 in seventh place. Earlham won the meet, while Wittenberg was second and Ohio Wesleyan was third. On the women's side, junior Sarah Weide (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) finished in 2119, good for 3rd place. Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) ran the course in 2132, which placed her fourth in the competition. Again, Earlham won the meet, followed by the host Tigers and Ohio Wesleyan. Next game 9/23 @ Cedarville Invitational
FIELD HOCKEY Coach Marianne Beshara (first season) The field hockey team ran its impressive season-opening winning streak to five Sunday with a 2-1 victory over NCAC rival Denison in Granville. Juniors Emily Duh (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) and Breinne Esser (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) had goals for the first-place Tigers. The Big Red was a preseason Top-20 team in the coaches poll, as was the Tigers' Saturday afternoon victim, visiting DePauw. In the win over DePauw, Wittenberg dominated almost from the outset, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime and stretching it 4-1 by game's end. The scoring was spread around to four players, including senior Kelly McMullen (East Amherst, NY/Rhode Island/The Nichols School), the team's leading scorer on the season. Earlier in the week, Wittenberg defeated NCAC rival Kenyon is a 2-0 shutout. Goalkeeper Georgina Klinzing (Gasport, NY/Royalton Hartland) turned away 12 shots, while freshman Barb Keselman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) tallied a goal and an assist. Next game 9/15 vs. Oberlin
MEN'S SOCCER Coach Steve Dawson (11th season) After dropping a pair of nailbiters to open the season in the Wittenberg Invitational, the Tigers rebounded with a victory over Urbana, 4-1, on Wednesday and a road win over Rose-Hulman, 3-1, on Saturday. While injuries continue to dog the team, the Tigers appear to be overcoming them as they prepare for several weeks of road games. In the win versus Urbana, freshman Taggart Suddes (Ostrander, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) got the Tigers on the board near the end of the first half, and then sophomore Josh Hains (Granger, Ind./Clay) tallied the first of his two goals in the game just before halftime. Senior Adam Greenwood (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) assisted on both first-half goals. Against Rose-Hulman, Wittenberg again jumped out to a two-goal advantage in the first half and held on for the win. Sophomore Brian Armstrong (Delaware, Ohio/Dublin Coffman), had a goal and an assist to pace the offense. The Tigers' last game of the week at DePauw was cancelled due to inclement weather Sunday in Indiana. It will not be rescheduled. Next game 9/15-16 @ Wilmington Kiwanis Classic
WOMEN'S SOCCER Coach Fran Kulas (second season) The Tigers kept up the offensive barrage in the second week of the season, falling 4-2 at home to Heidelberg on Tuesday before rebounding for a 7-0 victory at Rose-Hulman on Saturday. Wittenberg opened the season with an 11-1 thrashing of Urbana on Sept. 1. For the season, the Tigers have scored 20 goals in their first three games, six by freshman Geri Woessner (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood). Woessner turned her second hat trick in three games against Rose-Hulman, pouring in three goals. Freshman Jill Rekers (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) added two goals and two assists in the week's games. The Tigers' last game of the week at DePauw was cancelled due to inclement weather Sunday in Indiana. It will not be rescheduled. Next game, 9/13 vs. Kenyon VOLLEYBALL (7-2, 0-0 NCAC) After opening the 2000 season with a 5-0 performance in the Alma Invitational, the Tigers continued their strong play against better competition last weekend at the Ohio Northern Invitational. Wittenberg finished 2-2 in the four matches played there, defeating Manchester and Thomas More in three games each, and falling to Ohio Northern and Mt. St. Joseph by identical 3-1 scores. Sophomore Brittany Baume (Springfield, Ohio/Southeastern), last year's NCAC Player of the Year, was again the story for the Tigers. She paced the team in kills with 75 in the four matches, while sophomore Tiffany Keller (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) added 42 over the weekend. Wittenberg begins its NCAC title defense Tuesday with a home match against Earlham. The Tigers were a perfect 8-0 in the league a year ago. Next game 9/12 vs. Earlham | ||
