SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Harold "Skip" Ivery has been named a 2002 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by Black Issues in Higher Education. The magazine named one male scholar-athlete of the year and one female scholar-athlete of the year in its April 11, 2002 issue. Ivery was considered for the male award before being named to the first team in football and track & field.

Ivery, a sophomore who has yet to declare a major, carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.84 and posted a perfect 4.0 in the fall 2001 semester. A native of Columbus, Ivery was a two-sport standout and the valedictorian of his senior class at Groveport-Madison High School. He is also a recipient of a Gates Millennium Scholarship at Wittenberg.

In his two years at the university, Ivery has worked his way into a starting position with the football team and has won three individual North Coast Athletic Conference track championships. Primarily a hurdler, Ivery won the 100-meter high hurdles indoor NCAC championship and placed third in the 110-meter high hurdles outdoor competition in 2001. This year, Ivery swept both high hurdles titles, earning provisional NCAA Division III championship qualification in the process.

On the football field, Ivery started all 13 games at wide receiver for the Tigers in 2001 after seeing action as a reserve player in eight games in 2000. He caught 42 passes for 451 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore, all three marks putting him second on the team. As a freshman, Ivery caught five passes for 62 yards.
