Rader
Juergens

The Wittenberg men's and women's swimming and diving teams were represented at the NCAA Division III championship meets, hosted by the College of Wooster at Miami University March 14-16 (women) and 21-23 (men), by senior Rachel Juergens (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) and sophomore SteveRader (Painesville, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius)

Rader, who also advanced to the national meet in 2001 and already holds six school records, made the biggest splash, finishing fourth in the 200-yard butterfly, good for All-America honors. Along with the national accolades, Rader's time of 1:52.41 was a personal best and a new school record. During the season, Rader's time dropped 12 full seconds, quite an astounding figure.

He also added a pair of Honorable Mention All-America finishes in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 butterfly. In the 200 IM, Rader had a personal best time of 1:53.39 en route to an 11-place finish. In the 100 fly, his 12th place finish was highlighted by a personal-best time of 50.65, which also was a school record. By scoring 26 points by himself in the national meet, Rader was unable to keep pace with perennial national champion Kenyon, but he did earn the Tigers' 25th place in the team competition.

Struggling to overcome the effects of the flu, Juergens, who holds 10 school records and qualified for nationals in 2001 as well, earned Honorable Mention All-America in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Her career-best time likely would have earned her a second straight All-America placement, but shewasn't healthy enough to put that together, finishing with a time of 17:42.03.She also competed in the 500-yard free and the 400-yard Individual Medley, but she didn't make the top 16 in either event.

It has been a rather uneven start for the Tigers, but the hope is that as the weather finally warms up so will the arms and bats that carried the team to a 22-12-1 record in 2001.

The Tigers opened the season with four straight wins, sweeping doubleheaders from Carroll and Central (Iowa) and outscoring their foes 40-12. Even as Wittenberg lost four of its last six while in the warm and sunny climes of Ft. Myers, Fla., the Tigers continued to bash the baseball, putting up 12 runs in the second game of a doubleheader against Calvin and 15 in the first game against Westfield State.

Since returning to Ohio and the accompanying 40-degree temperatures, Wittenberg has cooled off a bit and has posted a 2-3 mark. Last week, Wilmington and Ohio Dominican both posted wins over the Tigers before Wittenberg swept a doubleheader against Muskingum on Saturday and then fell 6-4 to Urbana on Sunday.

The offensive onslaught has been led by senior utilityman Scott Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain), who has started all 15 games this season while alternating between the outfield and second base and has posted a.480 batting average. He has collected two home runs, 17 runs scored, 11 runs batted in and six stolen bases while batting primarily in the leadoff position.

Also batting above .400 this year are senior catcher Nate Williams (Urbana, Ohio/Urbana), who is hitting .453 and leads the team in RBI with 15 and doubles with seven, senior centerfielder Lance Dill (Bellville,Ohio/Clear Fork), who has 12 RBI and team-bests of 18 runs and nine stolen bases, freshman outfielder Matt Foster (Granville, Ohio/Granville),who is hitting .429 in 10 games, and senior shortstop Bryan Burke (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick), who has been slowed by a hamstring injury but raised his batting average to .400 with a pair of home runs against Urbana.

The Tigers' most significant question mark entering the season - pitching - remains unanswered. Junior Brian Robinson (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) has been the team's best out of the bullpen, compiling a 1.04 earned runaverage in six appearances.

Among the starters, freshman Ryan Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, Ohio/Ft.Loramie) has a 3.45 ERA and a 2-0 record, while senior Nick Allen(Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler) has posted a 5.06 ERA in four starts, including a complete-game win over Muskingum.

The Tigers open NCAC West Division action this weekend with three gamesat Wabash, a single game on Thursday and a doubleheader on Saturday. Wittenberg was runner-up in the division a year ago to Ohio Wesleyan, and the Tigers have been projected to finish fourth overall in the conference this year behind the Bishops, the College of Wooster and Allegheny.

Clagett
The Wittenberg men's tennis team is off to a tremendous start to avery promising 2002 season. Following a 4-0 dual match start in Florida, the Tigers finished third in a loaded eight-team field at the Kerry Seward Invitational at Wabash College over the weekend.

Among the team's victories in Florida were decisions against Division I scholarship schools Cleveland State and Quinnipiac. The Tigers swept both of them and also upended St. Ambrose before winning a crucial 4-3 decision against Wheaton. That win solidified Wittenberg's position among the top 10 in the region - at last check, the Tigers ranked ninth as a team, with the top eight advancing to the NCAA Division III tournament in May.

At Wabash, the Tigers were third as a team behind Washington University and Kenyon College, two of the top teams in the nation. In singles, junior Casey Clagett (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Steamboat Springs) finished third at No. 1, sophomore Duby Lakos (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) was fourth at No. 2, junior Eric Cusick (Lima, Ohio/Senior) wound up third at No. 3, junior Mike Herzog (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern)took fourth at No. 4, junior Ben Hodgkiss-Lilly (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) had the best finish at second at No. 5 andfreshman Ben Burkam (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) captured third at No.6. In doubles, Lakos and Herzog were sixth at No. 1, Cusick and Hodgkiss-Lilly were third at No. 2 and Clagett and Josh Conley (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern)were third at No. 3.

The Tigers have put together an outstanding indoor season, and all indications are that the outdoor one holds at least as much promise. After capping the indoor campaign at the North Coast Athletic Conference championship meet with a second for the men and a fourth for the women, the Tigers turned in a strong showing against a mostly Division I field at the UNC WilmingtonSeahawk Relays on March 16-17 and then ran strong against a deep field in frigid conditions on Saturday at the Dick Small Invitational at Defiance College.

Mumper
In North Carolina, sophomore Kristen Mumper (Cincinnati, Ohio/PurcellMarian) turned in yet another great triple jump performance, breaking the outdoor school record en route to a second-place finish in the event after breaking the indoor record three times this year. She also finished second in the long jump.

Also performing particularly well in that event were sophomore KellyZilli (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Alter), who was second in the 800 meter run and junior LaRissa O'Neal (Indianapolis, Ind./Broad Ripple), who was third in the pole vault with a personal best mark. And another school record fell in the hammer as junior Erin Zayicek (Solon, Ohio/Solon) posted the strong mark. On the men's side in North Carolina, senior Chris Silliman (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was second in the discus with a personal best throw. In addition, freshman Greer Illingsworth (Irvine, Calif./University) had a personal best in the 400-meter hurdles.

Drake
Last weekend, sophomore Joel Drake (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) andSilliman highlighted the men's performances with a 1-2 finish in the discus. The Tigers finished fifth in the 14-team field.

For the women in Defiance, Mumper won the triple jump, senior Sarah Weide (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) was second in the 1500 and seniorMelanie Ziarko (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) was runner-up in the 10,000.

Men'sLacrosse (1-3, 1-1 NCAC)
Coach: Vinnie Lang (second season)

Patterson

Nichols
Perhaps all the Tiger men's lacrosse team needed was some home cooking. Returning home for the first time since the season opener nearly three weeks earlier, the Tigers pounded Oberlin 15-0 on Saturday to move to 1-3 overall on the 2002 season and even their NCAC mark at 1-1.

Wittenberg was in complete command from the outset. Offensively, theTigers got three goals apiece from junior Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) and senior Alex Nichols (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney),two goals each from senior Nate Reed (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller),freshman Cory Essig (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and junior Spencer Dunning (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont), and single tallies each from freshman Trevor Carlson (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington),sophomore Hans Rydquist (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and senior Justin Bitner (Lansing, Mich./Waverly)

Defensively, the Tigers allowed very little as three different goaltenders played, making just one save each.

The blowout win came on the heels of a series of tough losses for theTigers, including a pair on a Spring Break trip to Virginia. After taking preseason NCAC favorite and sixth-ranked Denison to the wire in a season-opening loss on March 2, Wittenberg traveled to Randolph-Macon and lost a late lead and then were beaten 14-6 by Virginia Wesleyan, in part thanks to a seven-goal outburst in the third quarter by the host team.

No rest for the weary, however, as the Tigers head back to the road for a non-conference game at Denison on Tuesday before getting a week to regroup.

Softball(7-8-1, 0-0 NCAC)
Coach: Becky Hall (fourth season)

Schneider
It hasn't been the kind of start that the Tigers had hoped for, but there is a lot of softball yet to be played in 2002 - hopefully in warmer temperatures, under sunnier skies and with a team that finally begins to click.

The Tigers went 5-4-1 in Florida earlier this month but suffered a major blow when freshman Jen Fleming (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne)went down in the first game of the year with a broken leg. She was expected to be a major contributor, and losing her for the year dropped the team down to just 12 healthy players.

Since returning from the trip, the Tigers have been having a tough time, especially on the mound, as opponents are batting .285 against Wittenberg pitchers and have collected 119 hits in just 103 innings. Offensively, the Tigers are scoring some runs, six more than their opponents overall, and have two regulars hitting better than .300.

Leading the charge with the bat has been junior centerfielder Beth Walters (Westerville, Ohio/DeSales), who is hitting a sizzling .457 in 16 starts. She leads the team with two home runs, 12 runs batted in, 33 total bases and six doubles. Senior shortstop Christy Schneider (Fairfield,Ohio/Fairfield) has also been hot of late, raising her batting average to .333 over the weekend in losses to Albion and Adrian. Schneider, who bats leadoff, tops the squad in runs with 20 and is tied for the team lead in doubles with six.

Wittenberg has some time to get things together before the conference schedule opens as the Tigers travel to Thomas More for a Wednesday afternoon doubleheaderand return home for two games against Defiance on Saturday.

Jacobson

Romanowski
For a team that is replacing more than half of its offensive production, both goaltenders and the bulk of its defensive presence, growing pains could be expected. Still, the Tiger women's lacrosse team has been verycompetitive in the early going of the 2002 season and may be gaining momentum heading into an off-week and then the NCAC schedule after that.

Last week, the Tigers returned from a 1-1 Spring Break trip that included a loss to Regis College and a win over Salve Regina in Panama City, Fla. to go 1-2. Wittenberg upended visiting Puget Sound on Monday by a 12-9 count but then was defeated twice on the road over the weekend by St. Vincent and Frostburg State.

The offense has generally been holding its own so far this year. Against Puget Sound, senior Erin Jacobsen (Fairport, NY/Penfield) scored five goals to power the offense. In a 12-9 overtime defeat at St. Vincent on Saturday, junior Cara Romanowski (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) had a season-high six goals, while Jacobsen chipped in with two. Then against Frostburg State, the Tigers got a pair of tallies from Romanowski and a goal and an assist from sophomore Kate Williston (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster)

The Tigers return to action on April 6 against Oberlin under the lightsat Edwards-Maurer Field. That will be Wittenberg's 2002 NCAC opener.

The Tiger women's tennis team was off last week after going 2-3 in Florida on Spring Break the previous week. For the spring, Wittenberg is 3-4 against top-quality competition and for the year, the Tigers are also 3-4 against Division III competition. Leading the way for the team is No. 1 singles player Emily Figel (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead), who was the runner-up in the regional tournament last fall and currently has a 10-3 record for the year, including an 8-2 mark against Division III competition. Also playing well is No. 2 singles player Shannon Oliphant (Columbus,Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), who is 6-4 with two three-set losses on her record this year. Things get cranked up again for the Tigers this week as they take on Northern Kentucky on Wednesday in their home opener.
