SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Another banner spring sports season has reaped tangible rewards for 37 Wittenberg University athletes who were selected to All-North Coast Athletic Conference teams over the last two weeks.

Announcements for men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's tennis, softball and baseball have come in separate releases from the NCAC office over the last two weeks. All-conference selections in golf and men's and women's track were determined by individual finishes at the conference championship events that were held April 29-30 and May 4-5, respectively.

Leading the way were Wittenberg's two spring sports Players of the Year, senior women's lacrosse attacker Kati Robbins (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) and freshman track phenom Geri Woessner (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood).

Robbins was named Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year and to the All-NCAC first team for the first time in her career after garnering second team notice two of the last three years and honorable mention accolades in 1999. Robbins, who led the conference in scoring with 86 points, assists with 40 and points per game with 5.73, set an NCAC record for assists in a season and broke Wittenberg's school records for assists in a season and a career.

Robbins had a hand in half of Wittenberg's goals for the 2001 season, one that ended with a 9-7 overall record and 4-3 mark in the NCAC regular season. She was joined on the first team by sophomore Cara Romanowski (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), who contributed 47 goals and seven assists from her defensive midfield position. Making second team was senior Jennie Stone (Damascus, Md./Damascus), who scored 22 goals, and earning honorable mention were senior Danielle Paglino (Troy, Mich./Marian), the team's leader in ground balls, and freshman Kate Williston (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), the lone first-year player to gain conference honors.

Woessner, the NCAC Women's Soccer Newcomer of the Year in 2000 and also a standout with the women's basketball team, was the NCAC Women's Track Field Events MVP after winning the heptathlon and shot put and finishing seventh in the shot put. She went on to add a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters and a sixth as a member of the 1600-meter relay team.

A provisional national qualifier in the heptathlon, Woessner led a host of Wittenberg women's track all-conference performers, several of whom are also still hoping to make the NCAA Division III Championships May 24-26. Track athletes earn All-NCAC recognition with a top-three finish in the NCAC meet.

Sophomore Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) is a provisional qualifier in the 1500 meters after her runner-up finish at the NCAC meet. Junior Sarah Weide (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) was second in the 800 and missed provisional qualification by .08. Sophomore Andi Warner (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) was second in the shot put and the javelin, and she also is a provisional qualifier in the latter event. Finally, senior Julia Kregenow (Lancaster, Wisc./Lancaster) was second in the discus.

On the men's side, senior Josh Guerreri (Avon, Ohio/Avon) is the team's lone automatic NCAA qualifier after winning the decathlon with a school and conference record 6,420 points. He also added a second-place finish in the 110-meter high hurdles as he guided the Tigers to a second-place NCAC finish. Joining him in garnering all-conference honors were junior Brian Gehle (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake), who took a pair of seconds in the decathlon and high jump, a third in the pole vault and was a member of the first-place 1600-meter relay team. Also on the victorious relay were freshman Demetrius Ellison (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity), junior Mark Trempe (Springfield, Ohio/St. Paris Graham) and freshman Alex Yurovitsky (Richmond Heights, Ohio/Lyndhurst Brush).

All-NCAC honors also went to freshman Skip Ivery (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport Madison), who was third in the 110 hurdles, Ellison, who was second in the 200 by .01, junior Joel Drake (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee), who was second in the discus, and the members of the second-place 400-meter relay team - Ellison, Trempe, Yurovitsky and junior Andy Waddle (Enon, Ohio/Greenon). Rounding things out were a pair of freshman javelin throwers, Tim Gaal (Amanda, Ohio/Clearcreek) and Mike Klotz (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain), who went 1-2 in the event at the NCAC meet, breaking their own school records and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

The Wittenberg baseball team finished the year with a 22-12-1 overall record, wound up second in the NCAC West Division and fell in the semifinals of the conference tournament to eventual champion Ohio Wesleyan University. The Tigers placed five players on All-NCAC teams, led by a pair of first-team selections - senior rightfielder Ryan Peters (London, Ohio/London) and junior shortstop Bryan Burke (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick). Peters led the NCAC and ranked second nationally in home runs per game with 14 in 35 games, and both players hit better than .400 for the season.

Junior centerfielder Lance Dill (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork), who also hit better than .400 from the No. 2 spot in the lineup and led the team with a .988 fielding percentage, made second team. Honorable mention went to senior first baseman Brad Pochard (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay), who hit .336 and was second on the team with .984 fielding percentage, and freshman righthanded pitcher Kurt Hartfelder (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), the team leader in wins with five.

In softball, Wittenberg finished fourth in the conference with a 7-5 NCAC mark and a 19-15 overall record. While the team was unable to defend its 2000 regular season and tournament title, the Tigers still placed two players on the All-NCAC first team - senior first baseman Carisa Clagg (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern) and senior leftfielder Kristin Kallendorf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills). Clagg, who became the NCAC's first four-time all-conference choice, led the league with a .424 batting average and four triples. Kallendorf hit .359 and drove in 15 runs on the season. The two players also led the team in fielding percentage at .984 and .974, respectively.

The men’s tennis team concluded another outstanding season with a 16-6 overall record and a third-place finish in the NCAC tournament. Leading the way, as he has each of the last three years, was senior No. 1 singles player Bryan Heft (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln). Wittenberg's first four-time All-NCAC performer, Heft went 22-4 in 2000-01 and was recently invited to the NCAA Division III Singles Championships. Also earning all-conference recognition were sophomore Casey Clagett (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Steamboat Springs), who went 14-9 at No. 2 singles, and sophomore Eric Cusick (Lima, Ohio/Senior), who went 15-6 at No. 3 singles.

In addition, the No. 1 doubles team of Heft and Clagett compiled a 16-7 record and earned a second-team nod.

On the women’s side, sophomore No. 1 singles player Erin Beach (Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler) finished the year with a 17-8 record to earn first-team honors. A year after garnering second team recognition as the No. 2 singles player, Beach led the Tigers to a 14-9 overall record and a third-place finish in the NCAC tournament. Both were the best finishes for the program since 1990, Wittenberg's first year in the NCAC.

Wittenberg's other women's tennis all-conference honoree was sophomore Shannon Oliphant (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), who compiled a 17-7 record at No. 2 singles. She was a second-team choice a year ago.

The Tigers finished with a 5-7 overall mark in men's lacrosse and wound up 1-4 in the NCAC, which was good for fifth place. Three Wittenberg players were named to the All-NCAC second team - senior Mario Cassani (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit), who led the team with 28 goals and 43 total points, junior Nate Reed (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller), who won more than 70 percent of his faceoffs and tallied 19 points on the season, and senior Shawn Egan (Roswell, Ga./Innocent Episcopal), who had 21 goals and six assists.

In addition, sophomore Zach Kulow (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), who scored 20 goals on the season, and senior Tim Shuckman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller), the team's top defenseman, both garnered honorable mention nods.
