SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg University Tigers are going to be staying home this weekend when they play in the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Tournament. Ranked No. 3 in the nation with a 32-7 overall record, Wittenberg is the host team for the Great Lakes Regional, which gets underway Thursday, Nov. 14, with matches at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Ticket prices are $4 for adults, $3 for students with identification and $2 for children under the age of 12. No passes of any kind will be accepted, per NCAA guidelines. The doors will open at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The Tigers took care of business over the weekend, claiming a sixth straight North Coast Athletic Conference tournament volleyball championship on the heels of a sixth consecutive NCAC regular season crown. By laying claim to the tournament title trophy on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Denison University, the Tigers earned an automatic berth into the national tournament.

Wittenberg is the No. 1 seed in the Great Lakes Regional and thus has a first-round bye. Also getting a first-round bye is second-seeded and eighth-ranked Mount St. Joseph, the two-time defending Great Lakes Regional champion with a record of 28-6 going into the tourney. Squaring off in regional quarterfinal matches on Thursday are No. 4 seed Ohio Northern and No. 5 seed Catholic at 4:30 p.m., and No. 3 seed Muskingum and No. 6 Kalamazoo at 7 p.m. The ONU/Catholic winner takes on Wittenberg on Friday at 7 p.m., and the Muskingum/Kalamazoo victor takes on Mount St. Joseph at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday’s Great Lakes Regional championship match is slated for a 7 p.m. start time. Wittenberg, which has made the regional final three times in the last seven years, is led by a trio of outstanding sophomores who are hoping to take the Tigers to another level in 2002. Outside hitter Monica McDonald ranks among the top offensive players in the nation, setter Sarah Yuskewich leads the conference in assists by a wide margin, and outside hitter/libero Emilie Schmid tops the squad in digs and has been a tremendous all-around player. In addition, senior middle hitter Tiffany Keller was the NCAC Player of the Year and leads the team in blocks, and senior outside hitter Teresa Murphy is a three-time all-conference choice who ranks a close second on the team in digs this year.
