Wittenberg volleyball advances to regional title match

CINCINNATI - The Wittenberg University Tigers stunned the No. 2 seeded Ohio Northern Polar Bears, 3-2 (7-15, 15-10, 18-16, 11-15, 19-17), in the second round of the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament on Friday at the College of Mt. St. Joseph.

The Tigers, seeded No. 3 after winning 30 matches and the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament title, got huge performances from the quartet of sophomores who have powered the team all season. Outside hitter Brittany Baume (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) pounded 30 kills, outside hitter Teresa Murphy (Blacklick, Ohio/Newark Catholic) hammered 29 kills and picked up 31 digs, setter Shelli Habegger (Curtice, Ohio/Oregon Clay) had 69 assists and 28 digs, and outside hitter Tiffany Keller (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) had 14 kills in 23 attempts.

Wittenberg advances to Saturday's regional championship match against the host Mountie Lions of Mt. St. Joseph, a 3-0 (15-3, 15-3, 15-3) victor over Frostburg State in their second round match on Friday. The Lions are the top seed in the region and are ranked 11th nationally. Ohio Northern was seventh, while Wittenberg checks in at 18th.

The two teams square off at 7 p.m. at Mt. St. Joseph.
