SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg University women’s soccer team is off to its best start since 1995 with a 6-1 record following a 6-2 victory over Hanover on Sept. 23. The Tigers are situated in the 10th position in the most recent Great Lakes Regional standings. Making this fast start even sweeter, in only three weeks of league play, two Wittenberg players have been selected North Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week. Freshman forward Geri Woessner (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) earned the honor for the week of Sept. 18, and freshman forward Kate Williston (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) is the latest award-winner for the week of Sept. 25.

Woessner leads the Tigers and the NCAC in scoring with 11 goals and 26 points in seven games. Woessner was named conference player of the week on the strength of her four goals in a 6-1 victory over Albion, which tied a school record. The Tigers also defeated Kenyon that week, 2-0.

Williston ranks third on the team in scoring with 12 points. She was honored by the conference after scoring game-changing goals in both of the Tigers’ two victories. In a 2-0 win over Capital on Sept. 19, Williston broke a scoreless tie with a spectacular sliding breakaway goal. Against Hanover, Williston scored the second and third goals of the match to break a 1-1 first-half tie, sending the Tigers on their way to a 6-2 victory.

The Wittenberg University women’s soccer team, with 15 freshman on its 19-player roster, returns to action again on Sept. 29 when the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern invade Bill Edwards Field. Game time is 4 p.m.
