Next: Season Complete

May 2, 2001 - Wittenberg has lost five straight games, occurring at the worst possible time going into the first NCAC postseason softball tournament at Denison this weekend. To make things worse, the fourth-seeded Tigers will meet the top-seeded Big Red in the first round of the double elimination tournament.

Denison rolled into Springfield on April 24 and swept Wittenberg in a pair of shutouts, 3-0 and 2-0. The Tigers managed just eight hits in the doubleheader, including a 3-for-3 perfomance by senior outfielder Caroline Mann (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) in Game 2. Wittenberg ended the week on a shocking five-game losing streak as the Tigers were swept by Wooster 5-2 and 5-4 on April 28.

Wittenberg got off the slide last night in a home doubleheader against Thomas More College. The Tigers swept both games 9-3 and 11-5.
Senior first baseman Carisa Clagg (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern) entered the week atop the NCAC in hitting (.427) and triples (five). Senior outfielder Kristin Kallendorf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) ranked third in runs scored (26) and sixth in hitting (.376), while freshman pitcher Carmen Montgomery (Springfield, Ohio/Southeastern) was among the hitting leaders at .338.

Sophomore infielder Stephanie Campbell (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) leads the NCAC with 10 stolen bases in as many attempts. She is one of three Tiger players who haven't been caught stealing yet this season. Montgomery leads the league in wins (15) and is seventh in earned run average (2.08).

April 24, 2001 - The Tigers won three of four games last week, but they were knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten in the NCAC on Sunday. Hiram scored a 6-2 win in Game 2 of a doubleheader to snap the Tigers' streak of seven straight conference wins this season and nine in a row dating back to last year.

Wittenberg will host Denison in a showdown for first place in the conference Tuesday. The Big Red (9-1 in the NCAC and ranked nationally by the National Softball Coaches Association) enter the doubleheader with a one game lead over the Tigers.

Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Campbell (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) drove in five runs in a doubleheader sweep of Kenyon. She went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and three runs scored in a 12-4 win in Game 1, and she added a crucial three-run triple in a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.

Both Hiram games were decided by identical 6-2 scores. The Tigers won the opener and the Terriers the nightcap. Senior first baseman Carisa Clagg (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern) continues to lead the NCAC in batting at .464 and triples with four. Freshman pitcher Carmen Montgomery (Springfield, Ohio/Southeastern) pitched three complete games and posted a 2.17 earned run average in 21 innings pitched for the week. The workhorse of the staff all season, Montgomery has a conference-best 15-2 record, including 7-0 in the NCAC.

April 18, 2001 - The Tigers remained unbeaten in the NCAC with a pair of wins over Oberlin by scores of 9-1 and 14-1. Game 1 was stopped after five innings and the nightcap after six innings due to the run rule.

Freshman third baseman Kristen Hillebrand (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) went 2-for-3 with a triple with four runs batted in in the opener, while senior first baseman Carisa Clagg (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern) went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Clagg leads the NCAC in batting with an average of .500 and triples with four.

In the nightcap, senior centerfielder Caroline Mann (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) had two hits, including a triple and three RBI. Freshman pitcher Carmen Montgomery (Springfield, Ohio/Southeastern) picked up wins in both games on the mound and went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two RBI at the plate.

Montgomery pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in game two to improve to 12-2 on the season. She has won 11 straight decisions and the Tigers are 12-4 in that span.

The Tigers are second in the conference, one game behind leader Denison (6-0). The Tigers play conference doubleheaders this week at Kenyon and at home against Hiram before squaring off with the Big Red next week in what could be the decisive confrontation of the 2001 NCAC season.

April 12, 2001 - Wittenberg got defense of its North Coast Athletic Conference championship off to a good start with a doubleheader sweep at Allegheny on Sunday by scores of 5-4 and 4-0. The wins capped off the team's best week of the 2001 season, in which the Tigers captured a pair at Thomas More and split with Mt. St. Joseph.

Sophomore infielder Stephanie Campbell (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) was named the NCAC Player of the Week after batting .538 (7-of-13) in four games with one double, five runs batted in and four stolen bases. March 28, 2001 - The Wittenberg softball team got back to the diamond on Saturday after two weeks out of action following a 5-5 Spring Break trip to Ft. Myers, Fla. The Tigers opened the home portion of the 2001 schedule with a split against Heidelberg on Saturday.

Wittenberg took the first game, 4-3, thanks to some heads-up baserunning and solid pitching by freshman Carmen Montgomery (Springfield, Ohio/Southeastern). Junior shortstop Christy Schneider (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) scored on a double-steal attempt in the first inning, senior first baseman Carisa Clagg (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern) made it home on a catcher's error after stealing third base in second inning, and freshman rightfielder/second baseman Kelly Riedel (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern) came around on a pair of passed balls in the third inning, and Montgomery scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.

In the nightcap, the Berg got a bases-clearing double in the sixth to break the game open.
