WITTENBERG TO PLAY IN NCAA DIVISION III REGIONAL SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio---Wittenberg Universityıs softball team received its first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III softball tournament and will travel to Muskingum College for action beginning Friday, May 12.

Wittenberg (30-12) is the third seed in the Central region and will play sixth-seeded Buffalo State (27-12) at noon on Friday in the first round of the double elimination tournament. Six teams make up the Central region bracket with host Muskingum (43-3) taking the top seed. Alma (36-6) is second seed, Illinois Wesleyan (28-17) is fourth and Anderson (28-19) is fifth to round out the teams.

The Tigers earned their first-ever North Coast Athletic Conference title with a 13-1 conference record. Softball was first sponsored by the NCAC as a conference sport during the 1998 season. The Tigers made several marks in the record books this year, setting the school record for most victories in a season with 30. The previous record was set last season when the Tigers finished 23-20.

Wittenberg is lead by senior pitcher Carey Oakes who has set school records in both strikeouts and wins. Oakes holds the school season record for most wins with 18 and the career record with 42 wins. She also is tops in strikeouts in a season with 123 and in a career with 240. She was selected the NCAC Pitcher of the Year this season.

Also contributing for the Tigers is freshman outfielder Alea Bruggeman who earned NCAC Newcomer of the Year honors for her outstanding first collegiate season. Bruggeman led the conference in with a .492 average and in stolen bases with 21. Wittenberg is under the direction of head coach Becky Hall , who earned NCAC Coach of the Year honors this spring. She is in her second season with the Tigers and has compiled a 51-32 record.
