CLEVELAND, Ohio — Allegheny's Abby Bodenlos has been named Player of the Year and Denison's Rachel Thomas takes Pitcher of the Year honors to highlight the 2007 All-North Coast Athletic Conference softball selections. Wittenberg freshman Cameron Catalfu (Loveland, OH/Loveland), the lone freshman on the first team, earns Newcomer of the Year honors. Tigers End Season With Two Losses In NCAC Tournament
GRANVILLE, Ohio — A once-promising 2007 season came a sudden end on the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, hosted by regular season champion Denison. The Tigers, seeded No. 2 after going 11-3 in the NCAC regular season, were stopped in the opener by No. 3 seed Allegheny 5-3 in eight innings, and then fourth-seeded Hiram upended Wittenberg 5-1 in the last game of the day. Player of the Week: Rachael Hatcher Named NCAC Pitcher of the Week
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Sophomore Rachel Hatcher (West Carrollton, OH/West Carrollton) hurled the first no-hitter in Wittenberg softball history last week, as the Tigers went a perfect 6-0 in NCAC play. She went the distance in a 6-0 victory over Oberlin, allowing just one baserunner on an error in the second inning. She was 3-0 on the week, tossing a pair of complete games and allowing 11 hits and six earned runs in 16.2 innings pitched. Player of the Week: Lucy Huelsman Named NCAC Player of the Week
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Wittenberg senior Lucy Huelsman (Wellington, OH/Wellington) hit safely in all four of the Tigers' games last week. She finished the week 6-of-11 (.545) with six runs and six RBI. She dinged her first career grand slam in an 8-0 run-rule shortened victory over Baldwin-Wallace and also slammed a game-winning two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 7-6 victory over John Carroll. The wins ended the three-game losing streak that the Tigers endured on their annual Spring Break trip to Kissimmee, Fla., and pushed Wittenberg's record out to 7-5 overall.
