Wittenberg Beats California State-Hayward
In Battle of Nationally Ranked Powers
Oct. 22, 2004

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Wittenberg Tigers once again served notice that they are perhaps the team to beat in the nation in 2004, this time travelling to Atlanta, Ga., to defeat nationally ranked perennial powerhouse California State-Hayward in the second match of the Emory Tournament. The final was 3-1, and the game scores were 30-28, 30-32, 30-22, 30-23.

The Tigers were balanced offensively again, putting four players in double figures in kills, led by junior middle hitter Emily Dixon with 18 putaways. Senior outside hitter Monica McDonald slammed 14 kills, senior middle hitter Kristin Fox finished with 13 kills and freshman Emily Bell chipped in with 10 kills.

Defensively, the Tigers were led as always by senior libero Emilie Schmid with 41 digs, while McDonald posted 17 digs for yet another double-double. Senior setter Sarah Yuskewich was stellar around the net with seven blocks, backed by Dixon's six blocks.

Wittenberg, now 26-1 overall and ranked first in the nation, gets right back into top-notch action on Saturday with two more matches, including one against top-10 foe Emory, the host team.
