Wittenberg Beats Oberlin in NCAC Action
Oct. 1, 2004
OBERLIN, Ohio - As the seven-year anniversary of their last North Coast Athletic Conference loss approaches, the Wittenberg Tigers continued their winning ways against Oberlin Friday night, defeating the Yeowomen 3-0. Game scores were 30-15, 30-17, 30-19.
Wittenberg's reserves got plenty of opportunities in this one, starting with freshman setter Sarah Matesich. After spending much of the 2004 season watching and learning behind two-time All-American Sarah Yuskewich, Matesich stepped in on Friday and contributed 34 assists and three service aces in her first extended collegiate action. Freshman outside hitter Jan Kehres played well, pounding a game-high 17 kills and also recording three service aces. And not to be overlooked, senior libero Emilie Schmid made her usual contributions with 18 digs.
The Tigers now head to Wooster for a date with their closest pursuer in the race for the 2004 NCAC regular season championship. The Scots improved to 3-0 in the NCAC with a win on Friday night, just one-half game behind the Tigers, who are now 16-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The match was originally scheduled for 2 p.m., but due to a surprise visit by President George W. Bush on the campaign trail, the two teams will now play at noon in order to avoid some of the expected traffic snarls.
