Wittenberg Defeats Trinity in
Battle of National Title Contenders
Battle of National Title Contenders
Sept. 17, 2004
ST. LOUIS, MO. - The Wittenberg Tigers remained perfect on the 2004 season with a surprisingly easy 3-0 win over Trinity University in the opening match of the Teri Clemens Invitational at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Third-ranked Wittenberg improved to 8-0 on the 2004 season while defeating their second nationally ranked opponent in as many tries this season. The game scores were 30-23, 33-31, 30-28.
Offensively, Wittenberg got 43 assists from senior setter Sarah Yuskewich, who in the process entered some very select company. Yuskewich broke the North Coast Athletic Conference record for assists in a career and also surpassed 5,000 assists for her career, becoming just the 17th player in NCAA Division III history to reach that plateau.
Three players reached double figures in kills - senior Kristin Fox with 12 and junior Emily Dixon and senior Monica McDonald with 11 each. Defensively, the standout was, as usual, senior libero Emilie Schmid, who contributed 40 digs. Schmid ranks in the top five nationally in digs per game.
